Subject: NOT the WATER PUMP now?? IP: Logged
Message: AFter being told it was the water pump gasket that was leaking the coolant and it would cost 1000$$, i asked a friend that was a mechanic to ck it out and today he said from what he saw and did , it wasnt the pump. he cleaned everything up so he could see what was going on, he put some coolant in and pressure tested it, he also said that the tension on the belt was off and so he had to order some part that was 100$ and get a hose and thermostat and gasket and that should do the trick. i couldnt follow the name of what he said he had to order though. began with a T something has to do with the belt and the tension?? amazes me how 1 mechanic says its the gasket at the water pump thats leaking and now they say something else.... go figure, this is all B.S.

Message: Tensioner/Idler pulley probably...it's a common issue though I didn't recall them costing $100. I'll check and see...
Okay...Advance Auto Parts carries them for $20-26...but there's also a "belt tensioner assembly" they're selling for $63 and another one for $95. I would ask him to be sure (if he's doing things for you "at cost") but that could be what he got.
I don't think I've ever heard of a bad tensioner pulley causing a person to lose all their coolant though.

Message: i looked on auto zone too. he said it was a TENSIONER, yes GB2000 u got it. he was ordering it from the dodge dealer and said it would cost 111$$. so u know the dealers cost more. i dont know how that has anything to do with it either. maybe it doesnt but they noticed it when they were taking the belt off. i am and exact and detailed thorough person most of the time and when he explained it he did say they will replace the belt and the gasket and a hose and thermostat and then the tensioner. ill ask when he calls me back as to how that has to do with a coolant leak and how did they see it was off. i guess though when it was running they could see it was off. i dont know.
i do know gaskets and hoses and thermostats are very inexp. outside of this tensioner. who the hek knows. all so goofy.

Message: tensioner has nothing to do with the leak, but he couldnt get the belt off cause it was too tight , not supposed to be that way.
it was a small bypass hose that had the leak and thats where all the coolant was going out of and sprayed all over so it made it look like it was coming from something or somewhere else.
anyways its fixed, new thermostat and 62$ serpentine belt and new hose and new tensioner.
145 in labor and 198 in parts.

Message: This is why when I had my timing chain replaced, I insisted that the water pump, short hose and clamps be replaced regardless of whether they looked good. They had 130K miles on them, anyway.
