Message: Firts you have to understand that each gear in your trany has a ratio then you can safely assume that an OD will be 1:1 or higher (numerically lower) its turning the output shaft at roughly the same RPM as the engine instead of a reduced ratio for torque.
Hope that helps.

Message: Yes, you want it for everyday driving, it helps gas milege. Some guys turn it off when they race, that way they can really wind out 3rd gear.

Message: You should also turn it off if your transmission is "hunting", shifting back and forth often between third and fourth, never had a problem with my truck but I've seen it with lower powered vehicles usually on an uphill stretch of highway.

Message: When you turn off OD you are turning off 4th gear. Therefore, when racing you can run all the way through third gear. When driving through town, speed and rear gear depending, turning it off is beneficial. For instance, I have 235/70 R 15 tires and 3.55 rear gear. When I run at or below 45, I turn off OD because at that speed the tranny will shift into 4th, then back to 3rd everytime you want to speed up. Handy for towing at these speeds below 60.

Message: One other thing that wasnt addressed here so far.
When you turn off OD you also disengage your lockup (on most Daks, I could be wrong about yours) which will help alot with hunting as cbs says which will also make your Daks feel more responsive.
Hope I helped again, Scott

Message: no fazdak... the lockup (unless this only applies to 97 and newer) will engage if the overdrive is off. now if it is on and you are only in 3rd gear the lockup won't engage.
this is what is what is stated in the haynes book

Message: I have a 1965 Dakota 4 x 4 automatic transmission V6 -
Overdrive only works for the first few minutes in the
morning.
Once the engine temp comes up, it ceases to go into
overdrive. Any suggestions? It seems like a sensor or relay
problem rather than a real transmission problem.
Thanks

Message: I can't believe you all have such a poor understanding of overdrive. It is a gear ratio of LESS THAN 1:1. First gear on these is about 2.7:1, 2nd is about 1.45:1, 3rd is 1.00:1 and 4th (Overdrive) is 0.69:1. So the engine turns only 69 times for every 100 driveshaft revolutions. It's used for better economy, lower RPMs, but torque and HP are less because they peak at much higher speeds.
Al, I have the same problem, but intermittent. I think the solenoids are sticking. Just bought it from my brother, and I suspect he took it to Jiffylube and they put the wrong fluid in - he isn't sure. Am flushing it with ATF+3 this weekend, will repost.

electric by comp
3- O/D shift
O/D-Lockup
The O/D and lockup are controlled by the comp
42RH hydraulic gov pressure
oblong plug 3 wires by shift linkage
center wire 12 volt
front wire O/D
rear wire lockup
42 RE elec. gov pressure controlled by comp
a round plug with 5 or 6 wires same location
same system only more wires for gov pressure sensor
and solenoid
First check those connections on drivers side by
linkage
possible wrong fluid, bad connection, bad solenoid
The 12 volt batt is always there the comp grounds the circuit
to engage O/D and Lock up
You can also ground the wires manually up on stands to force
the shifts to see if it works, O/D than lockup not the
other way in that order
1 other thing some trucks were equipped with a trans temp
sensor if bad will shift lockup erratically or not at all
scanner if 4.9 volts read no sensor under 4.8 yes you
have the temp sensor
In trans line by radiator 2 wire plug

Message: 3rd gear is 1:1
OD is .69:1
I might have it backwards..
But with OD at 70 mph Rpms=2100
3rd gear=2800
Both are Approx.. rear gear ratio will effect it..
OD is like another gear...Gives you the speed at a lower eng RPM..

Message: "When you turn off OD you are turning off 4th gear."
For anyone who's not clear on the concept this statement is rather misleading. The two states are 3rd with OD off and 3rd with OD on. In other words, when OD is engaged your tranny is still in 3rd gear.

Message: NOT TRUE. You're the one who's misleading. Overdrive is 4th gear. When you turn the OD off, you shift back to 3rd gear. The overdrive clutch is engaged for 4th gear; in 3rd, the overrunning clutch and the direct drive clutch are engaged.
The overdrive is a combination of electric and hydraulic control. The electric control inhibits or allows the engagement of the overdrive clutch via the overdrive solenoid.
