Message: I have been doing some researching and thinking and am now wondering: Are the ignition system parts I plan to put on my truck really worth the money? I am trying to economically increase HP/TQ in my truck and I'm not convinced that a MSD 6a ignition, MSD 8.5mm wires, MSD Blaster SS Coil, AP3923 plugs, and a Borg Warner Distributor Cap/Rotor are really going to increase my horsepower that much. I'm looking at about $375 for all that ignition stuff. Would it be more worthwhile to put that money into something else, like FMS 21# Injectors or JBA Headers? Let me know what everyone thinks.

Message: Well, if you are going to put in a cam and headers, then to truely "unlease" the potential of the engine then you are going to need more spark and more fuel.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: I just finished installing my custom cold air intake on my truck. Made it out of 3" PVC pipe, a 3" Fernco fitting, a 3" 45 degree angle, a 3" 22.5 degree angle, K&N air filter #1009, and some reflective heat tape. To see pics, go to my website:

Tell me what you think. Anyone else about the ignition system parts?

Message: if it could be done, it would be nice to see a before and after with the ignition. personally, i think the coil with a good set of wires and plugs would be enough for the mods you have planned.

So you think I don't need to buy the MSD 6a Ignition and instead go with just the SS Blaster Coil, the wires, and plugs?

Message: Larry from J&J Auto has indicated that the addition of a v8, 46mm fastman or 48mm F and B TB would add anywhere from 15 to 18 hp at the rear wheels. I know he has dynoed his truck many times with different he has added. A typical v6 dak without mods is around 110 to 120 rear wheel hp without mods. The addition a 48 mm throttlebody that would add 18 hp would be a 15 percent gain in hp, thats pretty significant.

Message: if you wanna upgrade to a 6a igition you need to go buy a new coil and wires before you can use the 6a igition cause the 6a igition is really an igition ampiliar and you need better wires and coil to handle that extra power!

Message: Actually all you have to get is the MSD-6a box it will run very well with the stock box. The ignition wires will degrade quickly If you do use your stock coil use the Accel Super Stock Wires approximately 500 ohms per foot. If you use the MSD Super Conductor wires go with an MSD coil. Why? The Super-Conductor wires are 50 ohms per foot so you drawing alot of current through your coil. The more current you draw through the coil the more likely it will fail. So use a heavy duty coil thats designed to be used with MSD wires like the blaster coil. When I replaced my ignition system, with the MSD6a. I keep my stock coil in the truck as a spare just in case I should break down somewhere it will at least help me get down the road if I need it. It's always a go idea to have towing insurance and a cell phone and know someone like Larry from J&J Auto who is honest and know whats he's doing. He can troubleshoot a vehicle without a scanner if needed.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Message: Thanks for the the help. I've been having some problems with the guys running the Dyno, so I haven't been able to get any numbers for my truck with the 1.7 RR and the custom intake. Hopefully, I'll get 2 pulls on Tuesday. After that, I'll put Dave's TB on and post the power increase of it alone. Sorry for the long wait, Dave!

Message: Dynoed my truck today with my custom CAI and the Harland Sharp roller rockers. I initially pulled 10hp and 35tq LESS than the first run!! They ran the truck 5 times, all with the same results. Finally, a guy faxed DynoJet my results and the pros said to peak the 3.9L at a lower RPM. Sure enough, we Dyno my truck again, and I made up all of the lost HP/TQ. I ended up with 130 HP and 199 TQ which is less than what I started with 3 weeks and $300 worth of parts ago. I lost some, but at least I didn't lose as much as I thought I was going to.
The guys said that my truck was running ridiculously RICH (which doesn't surprise me, since I already burned up one catallytic converter). They said that's the main reason my truck lost so much power. I asked what I could do about it and he said that putting on the larger TB will help alot. He also recommended clearing the computer and looking into headers. The guy also said he had the same problem with a Corvette he owned. He put a CAI and a Flowmaster on it and lost something like 30 HP. But, he bought a TB that matched the CAI and picked up 44 HP from just adding the TB.
Anyway, the point I'm getting to is that I will hopefully free up all of that HP/TQ that is available thru the CAI and roller rockers by adding the TB. *sigh* What a day.

Message: Alright, well got some interesting info today at the Dyno. It appears that my initial numbers for hp/tq were incorrect. They ended up being much higher than they actually were. I said earlier that my initial numbers were 135/205. The actual initial numbers ended up being 122/172. After the roller rocker install it was 125/195. After the TB and the custom CAI my numbers were 136/205. So it appears that I never "lost" hp/tq, but instead had incorrect numbers at the start. Me and a guy working the Dyno went through all the pulls I've had (about 15) and ruled out the ones with bad numbers. Apparently, the pulls with bad numbers all had major spikes in them, making it look like my hp/tq was either really high or really low.
In the end, with the roller rockers, the custom CAI, the TB, and the cat-back exhaust I gained a total of 14 HP and 33 TQ. The roller rockers alone picked up about 20 TQ!!! Also, for daveshotdako, the TB helped pick up only about 5 HP and 5 TQ, but I did pick up 2-3 MPG just from the TB! The Dyno guy said that those HP/TQ numbers will go up when I add different mods to compliment the TB.

Message: Well it looks like you've got about 30% drivetrain loss. Auto right? Were syn fluids part of your plan? Just thinking of how much power they would be worth. Maybe Steve would kick in some Amsoil?
I need to install my crane 1.7rr's one day. Thanks for keeping us up to date Gunner.
