Subject: found out the costly problem .. IP: Logged
Message: seems the gaskets on either side of water pump are bad and the water pump appears to be leaking. This is the cause of the radiator losing coolant completely??? so the mechanic says. and he says itll be about 6hrs work he will do by himself and cost around 1000$$ total in parts and mostly labor of course. gaskets and hoses r inexpensive, whats a water pump cost for a 99 v6 sport? would i be better off getting the water pump at auto zone or pep boys, advanced auto? is this outrageous fee or is it normal? the gaskets are down under and things have to be moved out of the way to get to it??? any info would help. thanks a lot

Message: You should be able to find a water pump for around $65 bucks without even trying. You do have to remove the serpentine belt and clutch fan (if you have one) to get to the pump. the gaskets come with the pump and hoses are cheap. The work includes a few bolts the pump has about five maybe six, on my 98 at least. $1000 seems outrageous, I did the work in a 2-3 hours (I'm no expert mechanic) and spent less than $100 and that includes a new high quality serpetine belt.

Message: thanks for the info. i am going to pay for the parts myself and get a new belt and all as well. is the water pump new or is 65$ for a remanuf. one? the AC and all is all attached with this as well correct? i guess their fees to do the labor are more tham what some others charge . i have a friend who may be able to fix it for me and ill get all the replacement parts and pay him a small fee not a 1000$ though.

Message: I agree, $1K, seems outragious. But, make sure you understand exactly what he was intending to replace . . . it should be listed on your estimate. For example, he may have also concluded that the radiator was toast, and then through in new belts and hoses for good measure.

Message: When I had my Nissan I paid 1000 for them to replace my oilpan gasket and front oil seal. The whole deal was is that they had to remove the front differential so I guess how I could see how it took them so long...not really but oh well. 1000 for just a water pump is rediculous.

Message: I agree that $1,000 is WAY TO HIGH! I got a quote for $600 to replace mine, and that was higher than i expected. You can get a new water pump at Advance Auto with a "Life time warranty" for about $77.00 (including tax). You will want to buy a fan clutch wrench to make the job easier. The toughest part for me was removing the 4-5 inch steel hose that goes to the heater core. Had to take it somewhere to have it removed. If you have the time and not the money, it's definatly worth the time to save several hundred dollars.

Message: I just had a water pump replaced by the dealer. I'll look for the invoice but I'm sure it wasn't anywhere near a grand.
The water pumps that come in these things suck. They don't just show signs of leaking by dribbling for awhile, they go quickly and you can hardly keep water in it to drive a short distance.

Message: thanks to ALL the replies. YES i totally agree too. $1000 is WAY too much for labor and parts to replace a water pump and belt, gaskets and hoses. the place i go to is in clifton hgts pennsylvania. small town in southeastern PA. they r pretty good and nice men , there r 2 men and thats all. so my guess is the labor , all of 6 hrs of taking everything apart and then replacing it all again. It doesnt need a new radiator, thats fine. I looked at the engine and now i can see its really leaking coolant from where the pump is. This all sucks!! now im trying to find someone that can give me an idea of what they will charge to do the job. my sisters mechanic is very good and shes been with him quite a long time , so im waiting for her to get back to me with a number to call. and a friend i know IS a mechanic and ill give him a call. havent seen or talked to him in quite a long time but he is good and a nice person. WHO KNOWS.........
