Subject: Swapping in 360 next weekend IP: Logged
Message: I'm doing a swap from 3.9 (5spd nv3500) to a 5.9 with a vortech supercharger. The motor comes complete with gibson headers, msd 6a and all that jazz. From what I've read I need a 360 flywheel, where do I find this relatively cheap? Also is this going to have weights on it or not? I've already got the wiring harness/computer, just need info on the flywheel.
The motor is a '99 durango motor with 22k miles on it and my truck is a 2002 dakota cc.

let me know how it works, I want to do the same thing. I have a 1997 4X4 3.9 Ext Cab and its slow, as soon as I get a car to drive I am going to look for a motor, I was also told that the 3.9 is a 360 minus 2 cylenders so you might not have to change it. could you email me and let me know if there is anything I should look out for. jevanof@yahoo.com
THanks

Message: Even if it was a 318 in the swap, you'd still have to change the flywheel if you plan on using the MPI (6 cylinders vs 8 cylinders= 6 windows in the flywheel vs 8 windows for the crank sensor to read). The flywheel usually has weight removed, but can also have weights added as necessary to achieve the proper balance. Haven't seen a cheap one yet.

Message: The NV3500 is rated for 300 ft/lbs input torque (some HD models are rated for 340 ft/lbs, so I've been told.) and support a maximum vehicle load of 11,500 pounds.
It'll work with a 360, but it's lifespan will be directly influenced by how heavy your right foot is in relation to the far left pedal. Don't do burning rubber launches and it shouldn't explode two weeks after installing the engine...
This tranny has been used by numerous folks pushing more than the rated input power with good results. But the fact is simple, you are running more power through the tranny than what it was designed to endure, so don't be surprised if if doesn't last as long as it would have behind your V6. Good luck!
