Message: I'd check the ignition system as well as the fuel. Seems to me I remember someone saying something about a problem with a distributor bushing or something that caused wierd problems in the Gen IIs...

Message: My 94 3.9 did the same thing a few weeks ago it was the crank sensor and the pick module in the distributor. My mechainc told me when you change the crank sensor you need to change the pick up unit too. I thought it was the fuel pump also it would die and start back up. it done this twice and it would start the last time. Hope this helps

Message: My truck did the same thing. It was the pick-up in the distributor. the computer needs to see spark before energizing the fuel relay, hence the false impression of a fuel delivery problem.

Message: Check the plug that goes into the bottom of the coil. Mine was doing the excact same thing. The plug wasn't getting a good conection, I could spit in it and it would usually work fine for a while. But I had to replace it. I just went to the junkyard and took the plug off of another dakota.

Message: Mine died on the freeway. Broken distributor rotor. Dealer also recommended replacing the distributor gear and bushing. Is this a common ailment?

Message: Does it do it more in the mornign or after a rain storm? Mine did the exact same thing. Sometimes it would run great sometimes i had to crank for 5 minutes to get it to start, sometimes it would start but die as soon as i started driving. Turns out the insulation on the plug wires was cracked, they looked fine but the wires were arcing. Spray the wires with water and touch them with wour hand, if you get zapped replace the wires.

Message: 92' 3.9L, 180K miles. I've had the same problem(broken dist./rotor) with the shaft being replaced once and a number of rotores damaged over the years. Had gotten to carrying an extra one in the glove box. The problem isn't going away now by replacing the rotor, and it sounds like I'll need to replace the shaft and gear underneath it. I understand that there is a TSB, does anybody have a copy of this? Or does anybody have the service manual that would show the shaft, gear and what tool is needed to pull the gear?
Thanks
Scott

Message: My 98 did that. Could be the crank sensor, cam sensor, or in my case the PCM.

Message: cam sensor - in distributer, under rotor button
crank sensor - bolted to block, behind passenger side head, sticks through between transmission bell housing and engine block.
Hope that helps.

Message: my dakota with 80,000 kms just stopped running. There is no spark from the coil. I have 12 volts going into the ignition coil once the engine starts to crank over. Is there a resisitance check that can be done on the pick up coil or cranksensor and if there is what is it.
