My truck runs like crap! I had all the mods but couldn't seem to find a happy medium so I put back to factory except the wires and air filter and left the tps sensor at .7volts. Autozone didn't have the factory champion plugs to go back in so they cross referenced to the autolite equivalent to factory. The truck seems to want to cut out when i go to give it gas, you can't gas it real quick or it chokes and sometimes backfires! I have the elbow off at the air filter for the K&N. I cleaned the throttle body about 2-3 months ago and boy did it need it. It made the idle much better. I'm wondering if it is gummed up again. What should I torque the throttle body bolts at when i put the new gasket in? Is it the plugs? Personally i think the champs are better than the autolite's. My truck never ran very good on any of them. Not the 3624's, or AP3923'3. This truck couldn't get out of it's own way!! It's 3.9 2002 5 spd rc sport. It's got the bigger tires on it from factory so I'm assuming the computer would have been programmed for them from factory. Could it be from having the elbow off the air filter? I always worried about water coming in the airbox!! Please help me get this thing to run better!!!

calm down a bit, you sound like a panic stricken woman. try explaining a little better what it does. does it backfire through the exhaust or intake? does it run good off idle? hows the fuel economy? as it stands i would replace the tps and map sensors. those control most of your off idle response. cleaning the throttle body would be good, but make sure your map port is clean and free of debris. let me know if this stuff works.

ok well it idles rough but not like it's going to shut off. you can not give it gas very quickly, you have to kind of go slowly but once its going it's fine. so i'm guessing it probly is something controlled by the idle. If you gas it too quickly it will either backfire through the throttle body or it just kind of cuts out. Are the tps sensors expensive? I might just replace it anyways if it is not expensive. What is the map sensor and where is it? Sorry i forgot to mention. the truck has 43k on it and as far as mods it has flowmaster 50 series single out, brass cap & rotor, JBA wires, K&N drop in with elbow removed and front flap, TPS adjust. I had the autolite ap3923's in and gapped at .045 and didn't run too well, had the crank sensor mod and put it back to factory, had 180 thermo but put that back to factory as well. I just wonder if the computer is all messed up from switching back and forth. Should i reset the computer and see if that helps? I just feel like i'm hauling a pile of cement blocks around in the back all the time.

I would reset the computer but also change the tps and map. map is the sensor on the front of the throttle body. from what you tell me it sounds like the tps isnt telling the computer that its back on idle. and the variation in the map to the tps could cause the stumble. so definetely look there first. the air intake wouldn't cause this.

Just bought a TPS, MAP, IAT, and IAC valve recently. They are $25, $25, $25, and $45 respectively. I got mine from advance auto parts.

are you guys running with the TPS mod? Should I set the new one or leave it be and do you think if the TPS is bad that the mod could have caused this? Also, have noticed now lately that my cooling fan is engaged right from start up a lot of times, even when i start up from cold. After i accelerate it goes away. Do I have to replace the whole fan or is the clutch in the fan seperate? And last but not least the spark plugs. I don't want to start a whole thread here on plugs but do the champs run better than auto's. Why the heck don't the auto stores ever have the champs. Only place that seems to have them are carquest and the dealer. Hey 93dak4x4, i wanted to mention to you that i have noticed on my SS exhaust tip that it has a lot of black carbon on it, maybe running rich or just more noticeable because of the SS tip. Would that factor in anywhere into this equation or help you determine anthing. Fuel sucks as normal but average from what I hear, about 15-17 without A/C on. Wouldn't i get any codes or engine light if any of these sensor went bad? as always i appreciate everyone's help and I know we'll get this truck running good again. the stupid dealer keeps calling me to sucker me into getting the injector service done. I'm sure it helps and it's better than dumping a bottle of STP in the tank but isn't there a more economical way to clean them myself?

Well yes alot of black on the exhaust shows its running rich. I had my comp throw a code without triggering a light, so you may have that as well. I had my 02 sensor go, made it run pretty bad. but thats not the cause of your throttle stumble. it could be the map sensor for the richness too. yes your adjustment of the tps could have caused it. or maybe not. i just left mine alone after i put it on. has great throttle response. but personally i would start with a map sensor, i have a feeling that is part of it (just a hunch). unfortunately i can't tell you much without getting my hands on it myself. where are you located at?

I live in lancaster, Pa. Amish country!!! I'm going to reset computer tomorrow and maybe I'll put the TPS back to factory. It was in the .5's voltage area before I did the mod. I'm going to get prices for the map sensor and the tps this week when i get my throttle body gasket. I'm also putting the champion's back in. If it doesn't run any better than I'll put the sensors on. I'll keep you updated. thanks

alright, well i looked into the sensors. Forget that! They aren't getting replaced unless i know for a fact that they are bad. Advance auto wants $98 for a TPS sensor. Hey Doug, are you sure you got new ones? I put the rivets back in mine so now it is running where it was from factory. I metered it before putting it back to stock and it was .65v. I also disconnected the battery and let it sit for awhile and turned the key on and off a couple times. I hooked the battery back up and started it a couple times to learn idle. The truck seems to run well but it always does that after a reset. It seems to run better when it is learning than it does after it has learned. I had tried so many different things as far as mods and didn't like them, then would try them again, then go back to stock but never reset computer thinking it would just learn. Maybe it got confused and this reset and tps back to factory is the answer. the throttle hesitation is not nearly as bad. time will tell I guess.
