Subject: Bosch +4's -> Underwhelming IP: Logged
Message: I just hit 60k and so replaced my spark plugs and spark plug wire set with the Bosch +4 and premium wire set. The first time i started it started quicker than ever, but after that it was back to normal. I don't know if it is because of the spark plugs, but my acceleration has seemed to go slightly down hill. I have read in other posts that this has happened. There is a performance improvement guarantee policy on the plugs so im thinking of getting a refund. What would be the best to get. I hear autolites alot, but is there really any difference between autolites and something else?

Message: Call me a lemming but reading a bazillion posts praising the magic Autolights, I bit. Field R&D shared on several Dodge fan sites sold me.
Taking Discovery's Myth Buster approach may be the way to go, so post results. I've always thought any quality plug is fine. Heat range may make a difference with electrode length etc., but can just plugs make a noticeable improvement?
Okay, solving for ping under load, I shot gunned the bugger. Autolight 3923's, copper pole piece cap and rotor, and the mysterious 180 T-stat. I'll never know what the plugs alone did, but the combination cured detonation, smoothed the idle and made it pull harder through the mid-range.
Can plug brand or technologies really make a "feelable" difference? What about their life span before properties change? Are performance gains the result of interactions with combined parts?
I think this owner/tuner science comes with a pay off. You didn't take it into the man and say "um, it needs a tune-up". Beat the man!

Message: I run the +4's and it purrs like a kitten. Acceleration is no slouch either. I get an easy 18+ mpg but it's a v8.

Message: Dump the Bosch's, and the Autolite's!
I've tried them all and ended up with the Champion Truck Plugs (#4071).

Message: so you think i should stick with a standard truck plug darryl. I went to champion's website and their best plug is iridium??? (http://www.championsparkplugs.com/results_app.asp?AAIA=1353989)
i have heard that platinum plugs do not work that well with the magnum engine, which is my result also, so should i get the truck plugs or pay $5 more per plug and get the elitest (so they say) plug.
in case it helps i have a performance chip, exhaust, and cold air intake and soon a new tb.

Message: Greg, I have tried the Bosch +4's 4418's and 4417's (1 step colder). I have also tried the Auto Lite 3923's (copper core and platinum).
My truck idles the best, with no ping and no misses a WOT with the Champion truck plugs.
I have no personal experience with the Champ iridium's, so I can't comment about their performance.
But as easy as it is to change the plugs/wires/cap/rotor, I use the "cheaper" Champions and change everything @ 20,000 miles....My motor is always "tuned-up"!!!

Message: Darryl: every truck is diffrent, whatever works for you may not work for greg, greg your best bet is just to try the autolites if you like them then keep them, if not try something else, you'll never know till you try other plugs for yourself.
My truck looks like it was in a knife fight, and lost! http://www.cardomain.com/ride/1275365

Message: Every truck will run different on different spark plugs. If you run an after market ignition like the MSD you will likely get better results. I have a complete MSD on a v8 dakota and v6 dakota and I have had god results on both trucks mith the Autolite 3923s and the AP3923s. I have tried the Bosch Platinum 4418 +4s and the 4301 +2 with good result with these. I have have tried the E3 plugs and had pingng problems with timing at it current value. The E3's create a flame front quicker than most spark plugs thats why. I am current running a set of torque master plugs from extremespark. The dakota runs very well on them. I have even taken a seo of the autolite 3923 and side gapped them with very good results at .045 thousands along with the MSD system.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Message: Greg-
As others have said, go with the autolite 3923's. I have a 99 3.9L and I noticed a big difference so to answer your question, in my opinion there is a difference from plug to plug. I have the same mods you do and a couple more and I am very pleased with the 3923's. Just another opinion.

Message: Switching plugs is great for fine tuning but if you have problems running a stock engine on stock plugs you obviously have other issues too. Unless you have lots of performance mods don't expect plugs to cure your problems. In the long run your problems will just get worse.

Message: thanks for all the info!,
i have not had any misfires or problems, but i just have not seen any improvement from my old champs, which were in decent condition when i took them out. I think i might just keep these a little longer to see how they hold out and them switch them up with Autolites when i have a little more modification (maybe even the msd equip., which looks kind of confusing since im an newbe with this stuff) i also replaced the spark plug wire set with bosch but they may also go when i switch the plugs
