Subject: Need electrical/charging help! IP: Logged
Message: I have a 96 dak sport 3.9. A few weeks ago when leaving the gas station, truck wouldn't start with turn of key. Dashboard lights would come on faintly but wouldn't turn over. After 5-6 turns of the key started up fine. No prob for a couple of weeks then same thing at gas station while on way to airport. After 5-6 turns of key started, but this time GEN light stayed on. While in traffic died once when came to an idle and started after 5-6 tries. After 5 days at airport garage started fine. Next day wouldn't start at all, dashboard lights would come on faintly. Friend gave me a jump. Would die if allowed to come to idle. Turned on lights, had brief power surge and blew fuse. Since then I had the alternator tested, it's good. And bought a new battery. Now it runs fine, GEN light is off, but I blow the headlight fuse if I try to turn them on. Do I have a short somewhere??? And if so where should I look? Also would this have caused my initial problems by creating a power drain on the battery? But if so why were my headlights working fine until first blown fuse? I've checked all the visible grounds under the hood and they are good. I'm a novice mechanic and any help is appreciated!

Message: Probably was a bad connection at the battery terminals.
Also, models with a tachometer have an inherent design flaw that allows them to draw 100 mA with engine off. This can cause low voltage and slow cranking within 2 weeks.

Message: Yeah, when I bought her 5 years ago from a used car dealer the tachometer wasn't working. I had the dealer fix it before I bought it. I wonder if the previous owner disconnected it for that reason??? I still blow my fuse with headlights, and have also discovered my wipers won't work at all, even after replacing the blown headlight fuse.
