Subject: Increased Power and MPG from Mods IP: Logged
Message: Last month I had to replace my intake gaskets, so I decided to do some mods while the engine was a part. I put in Autolite 3923 spark plugs, 180 thermostat, home made cold air intake (PVC pipe and K&N Cone Filter), relocated the Intake Temp sensor to the cold air intake and removed the rubber flap left of the radiator. Also a new cap & rotor. Before I did the mods I was getting 16.5 mpg highway, I just check my mileage and I am getting 20.7 mpg highway w/quite a bit more power. I am going to put the Sensor back and run it for a few weeks to see if my mpg increase and if there is a difference in power.
If it weren’t for this forum, I wouldn’t have known the mods existed.
Thanks

Message: Why would you waste money on aftermarket v8 and then put it on a mostly unmodified v6? The only thing that would get surprise would be your wallet when it loses all that weight.

Message: Yeah, the guy above has a thrifty point on spendy after market TB's, called the local wrecking yard, they quoted $60 for a fresh V8 TB. That baby, a gasket, a couple of mods and hoo-hoo more toys to play. If it hoses up I'll find a fine admiring spot on the shelf.
It's all about gettin' a pay-off doin' it yourself. Beat the man! Labor charge zero. Once you're ahead, like your current efforts, you have earned some bonus parts. Do more..MORE AHHHH!

Message: Gregg, the real point is that a stock v8 tb is already bigger then the bores in the v6 manifold, which means that the v8 tb is actually a bit too large for the application. Once you exceed the capacity of the manifold it really doesn't matter how big you go. Unless you modify the manifold a 47-48mm tb is as big as you can go. Anything larger degrades performance.

Message: oops, I stand corrected. In my quick reading I thought the flow improved or something. Missed the bore matching point. I hopped on N5's term "aftermarket" as I recalled owners buying spendy ones. Not sure if they researched this well.
Some have fabricated a matching plate making for a taper bore effect. Clever devils. Without a flow bench I think I'll pass and look for some other toy. Ahhh, I need the cold air intake.
Thanks N5

Message: DakotaDave,
I have a 97 Dak 4x2 3.9 v6, get the a 97 or newr v8 throttle body from a 5.2 or 5.9 v8. They are the same size. i have tried the unmodified v8 TB on my truck and it worked great. I then cut the air horns off and rounded the tops of the throttle plate opening and end up with a noticeable increase in power with no loss of mileage. Good Luck and report back.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Message: Just curious...don't most V6's come with either a 42-46 mm tb, depending on the year or something? Which would mean you could go anywhere from 2-6mm larger on a tb (depending on which one you have) to match it up with the size of the manifold inlet and get more performance. Plus I was thinking that a V8 tb was 50mm with a torque step that brings it down to 48mm...which would be almost the perfect size, wouldn't it?

Message: The v8 tb would be perfect if it was 48mm straight thru. The problem with the v8 on top of the v6 manifold is the disruption of air flow (turbulence) as the air enters the v6 manifold. In the end I don't think it actually flows any more than a modified v6 tb.

Message: I have '98 4x2 3.9L. I have an intake kit (not true cool air, but increased flow), tb spacer, and high flow exhaust. All of these are supposed to increas hp, torque, and efficiency but I don't feel any difference, and mpg is not changing...any tips, suggestions, etc?

Message: Some of most recent mods seem to be responsible for increasing both my mpg and hp/torque. You will find that mods work together and usually don't show significant improvement individually. I am now at 18.3 mpg with 5.2 and I've reduced my 0-60mph by 1.5 seconds.
These are the most recent-
Crank Sensor Mod
JBA y-pipe
MSD Ignition
SuperChips
But they may not have worked as well without these-
Edelbrock Pro-Flo Air Cleaner
Modified TB & Intake Manifold
JBA Cat Back
JBA Headers
The cat back did nothing without the y-pipe which I think is more restrictive than the cat converter.

Message: What is a good place to get some of these parts?
Like MSD Ignition, SuperChips, modified TB & Intake Manifold, and headers? Also I've heard several people mention 1.7 Roller Rockers, All of these sound very fun and enticing, but where should I shop for them to get a good product at a good price?
