Subject: Fuel Delivery woes IP: Logged
Message: Hello all,Having a bit of trouble with an 88 Dakota with high mileage(235k+). In the mornings after the truck has sat all night,it just wont start,it cranks and cranks, but does not even an attempt to fire. I shoot ETHER(starting fluid) into the throttle body and it fires right up and runs like it should. It does this even when its been warmed up but not as severly. I also noticed thet it "PINGS" at highway speeds, which leads me to suspect its starving for fuel. I suspect the fuel pressure regulator is at fault, I had a friend of mine turn the key to the "ON" position while I looked into the throttle body, and I saw no spray of fuel.I know its not the fuel pump or else it wouldnt run at all after it started. Anyone else know what may be at fault or how to remedy the situation? Am I correct in suspecting the fuel pressure regulator? Thanks in advance

that wont help with a fuel injected engine
take the cap off the fuel rail
push down on the stem
it works just like a valve stem on the tires
warning dont get your face near and if the pressure is right you'll get a good spray of fuel with the key on lay some old rags under to soak the excess and to make it safer i recomend doing it when the motor is cold ......

Message: 88DAK, I know Joe M. means well but he must not be very familiar with our Gen 1's! I too have an 88 3.9, my truck has 190,000 miles and is on the second engine.
First, don't be so quick to rule out the fuel pump. I would have it pressure tested. The fuel line pressure at the TBI should be 14.5psi. Any more or less and you've got problems. More means obstructions, less means a new pump! I'm about to take mine in for the same test this week. Mine had the Fuel pump replaced 8-10 yrs ago so I might be due.
For you, some cheap things to do first...do you have any fault codes or check engine lights? Second, when is the last time you replaced your fuel filter? As for the pump, instead of checking to see if it sprays fuel I would turn the key to "on" and listen for the pump to cycle. It should breifly turn on and then off...but only once. If it doesn't it could be going bad. With the constant electical charge it could still keep the vehicle running even if it won't deliver the fuel at start up. Again have it tested, or buy a pressure tester and do it. Let me know if you don't know how.
I had an '89 Plym sundance and it wouldn't start, but it would run. Was finally diagnosed as a bad fuel pump.
