Subject: Another 96 3.9 running like crap prob. IP: Logged
Message: I have a 96 3.9 dakota with about 150,000 on it. It has ran like crap for the past year and I cannot find the problem.
I have replaced the following
Plugs, 3 sets
Wires
Distributor Cap
Rotor Button
Pick up coil
Ignition coil
PCV valve
Air filter
CONVERTER IS GONE!!!!!!!!
The symptoms:
As soon as it is cranked it has very little power at all. You have to rev the piss out of it to clear it out it seems. Even after that is still skips and sputters. Just slamming the gas to the floor it will bog then slowly tach up while skipping and sputtering then around 4-5 grand it will rev faster. If its in gear it does the same thing. When you give it gas is often pops and will not go and you can hear a popping noise coming from the engine like it is busting back.
Please help me fix this pos. If you need anymore info please ask.

Message: It sounds like the timing is off. Now, what actually causes the timing to be off when it is contolled by the computer is another question. Get a timing gun to see if it is anywhere close to what it is supposed to be.

Message: you may have a leak in the intake gasket or belly pan gasket. there are ways to check each of them - search this site. also, find a timing light and check your timing - the chains in this motor are known to get loose - do you hear any chain rattle at lower rpm's?

Message: screw it. I did both motor mounts today, well still have to put the d/s back on. I'll just pull the intake and the timing chain and get it all done at one time. Anyone know the felpro part number for the gasket kit I will need. I already have the timing chain. Is there any other name for this belly gasket. I'm gonna go do the check on it right now.

Message: Ok I did the intake gasket and belly pan gasket. I got everything back together and fired it up. Same crap. I drove it down the road and it spit and sputtered like crazy. It would barely get up hills ect. So when coming down a hill it runs decent. Oh yeah it has way more power than it did but it still has the skip pop crap.
This is what caught my attention. When downshifting because it was spitting and sputtering going up the hill when I would let off the gas it would actually pull hard right before there was no pressure on the petal. So I thought that I would try to go up a hill with just a little pressure on the pedal and it went up better than WOT but it still had a little sputter. I am thinking that this all could be the tps sensor. If you are sitting at idle in nuetral and floor it WOT is spits and pops farts ect. Backfiring through exhaust and intake. But if you ease on it it will work better but not perfect. Any ideas before I buy this tps sensor. Anyone got one laying around from all those V8 throttle body swaps you did. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Message: MAP sensor is mounted to the front of the TB. if you have a Haynes or Chilton manual(i suggest you get one if you don't) they should tell you how to check all these sensors before you go replacing them when you don't need to.

Message: Ok I went and tested the tps sensor. It was fine. I went and picked up a map sensor installed it and it still is doing the same thing after 15 minutes of running.
I guess I will go buy a timing light and check the timing.
If it was a stretched timing chain and was off a tooth could this cause this? What would are the symptoms of a timing chain?

Message: MULISHA00,
Tow things too check, the bogging down you describe indicates to me a possible idle problem. The IAC intake air controller on the back of the throttle body may be "carboned up causing it to stick and affect your idle. When was your O2 sensor changed? The O2 sensors on the Gen2 daks 92-96 need to be changed at approx. 60,000 miles.
Also there is a Schrader Valve on the driver side fuel injector rail that looks like a tire valve stem. This is where fuel pump pressure can be checked, I believe should have 30 to 50 psi for normal operation, if it's low it could starved for fuel. Don't forget to check the fuel filter, if you your truck is equipped with one. If so it should mounted on the frame about where the driver side door is. I know that the Gen 3 Dalotas 97 and newer do not have the filter. Good- Luck.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Message: I will pull the tb and clean out the IAC now that I know what it is.
The 02 sensors are brand new with maybe 100 miles or so on them.
I checked the fuel pressure at my buds shop and he had the figure and said it was in spec. I may do it again.
I am almost positive I have no fuel filter that its only filtraition is in the tank on the fuel pump.
I am putting a timing chain on right now. Right as we speak I have the water pump and crank pulley off. So I should finish that up in the morning and try this again. If its not the timing chain it has to be the fuel pump. The chain needed to be replaced anyway. Please keep the ideas coming as I really have no choice but to get this fixed soon. I am a broke college student and cannot afford to pay someone to do it or buy a new truck at the time. So if anyone has any info that could be useful or need anymore info from me post it. Thanks again to all that have helped and just for reading it. God Bless.

Message: MULISHA00
you dont need a new truck repost and let us know how you make out with the chain
also can you get the specifics on the fuel pressure test? or if not re'test when you can and post the results
as far as Daks their good trucks
owned mine for 5 yrs and in over 50 thou i put on my 94 only major problem i had was the fuel pump
got a good friend down south that put just over 350,000 on a V6 dak
(2 timing chains and 2 fuel pumps) through that time,(but the truck never broke down)
truck was still running great and he bought a new one last year gave the old one to his son .....

Message: I have a friend that went through two distributors because the bushing went bad. still going strong on the stocker in my 93. but a small thing i would check is the injector sync on your truck. to me it sounds like it is way off. do a search on this page, i know i have wrote it up about 5 different times. we had a similar problem with that on a truck we were workin on, trust me it can do wonders...and if its not too bad it still helps with mileage and power once you get her runnin right.

Message: Ok. Got the timing chain in. There was alot of slack in it and it looked like it was hitting that oil splasher I think. I bent the oil splasher/slinger in a little bit.
The truck still runs the same. It is quieter an runs a little smoother thanks to the timing chain but still skipping and busting back bad. It seems like it is starving when you give it gas.
Would someone enlighten me on the distributor gear. Can I just pull the dist. out and swap gears? Is it a pretty simple pull or anything special I need to know. Price on the dist. gear anyone?
After that comes the fuel pump. How hard is that to install.
