When traveling with the cruise control on the speed doesn't remain constant and will down shift like I'm stomping on the gas to get back to speed. The truck in general gets lousy gas mileage, any suggestions?

I have the same '03 truck in SLT trim w/3.92 gears and it annoys me to no end when that happens! I personally think the overdrive gearing is too much for the 3.9. If you find the cure, let me in on it!!
As far as fuel mileage, I've been getting 17 - 18mpg with rural driving. I don't feel that is out of line for a heavy 4X4 with a V-6. My 94 S-10 4X4, 5 spd w/4.3 gets about 19mpg.
