If you wanted to get rid of the computer. Could you use an electronic dist. from an older 318 V8?

I'm actually talking about a 1990 D150 truck. I would be getting rid of the throttle injection.

Yes you can use a dist from an older 318 with some slight mods. I am using that setup on my rockcrawler. All you need to do is change the reluctor for a 6 cylinder one. I am using one from a slant six and it just slides on the shaft over a roll pin. I also had to cut a new slot in my 6 cyl dist cap to get it to line up properly with the holddown clips. I am using a stock ignition box from an older 318 and it works great.

That's awsome! What are you using as an intake and what kind of carb are you using?

I'm using the stock 89 throttle body intake, redrilled for the carb bolt pattern, until I can locate a 4 barrel intake. I am using a stock 318 2 barrel carb right now.

I used a 318 distributor and had a special reluctor machined to the the odd-fire the 3.9 uses. I recurved the mechanical advance, and re indexed the distributor cap. Works fantastic. More power and better mileage. I'm sorry I didn’t do it years ago. The only down side is you loose the lockup in your converter when you take out the factory distributor. I got around that by creating a circuit board to activate the lockup based on the speed of the truck it also works great.

the intake from a 87 3.9 and a 318 2bbl carb from the 60s,70s or early 80s will work fine and [bolt to the 87 intake],with some throttle cable adjustment
