2003 3.9 with posi, tow pkg, HD group, club Cab, Ext cab. I use it for work, hwy/town driving and get a little over 16mpg. Just put in replacement K&N. Going to do one tank and check milage. Next is Flowmaster [40 series]. I'd like to do something with the ignition. Jet performance module?, MSD6AL?. Anybody have a thought on that? One other thing, does Dodge offer any performance support for the 3.9?

2002 SXT 3.9 Auto 4x4

Stock I was getting 13-15mpg, and I have a heavy foot most of the time. I added the following...

Intense Performance Stage II Intake
Dynomax #17748 Super Turbo muffler
Autolite Platinum 3923 plugs (AP3923)

Now I am getting 16-17.5 mpg on a normal basis. My best, and this is when I was driving without my foot in it a lot just to see, I got 18.1 mpg.

I have heard mostly negatives on the performance modules...mainly that they do not do as stated.

Dodge does not have many performance mods, if any, for the newer 3.9s...there are a ton of other places though...search the net. A good place for info is www.speedtweaks.net, they no longer have a full site running but they have kept a list of performance FAQs.

I find it quite sad that people in here have their trucks with less than 50,000 miles on it and they get only 15 or 16 miles a gallon, i just turned 162,000 and am still getting near 20 miles a gallon every tank. and all i have added is a vortex exhaust system and the K&N injection kit. It seems to me that the newer engines get far less gas mileage than the older ones.

It's not just the motor in the newer trucks, they are alot heavier as well.

I have an 2001. I was not impressed with 16 mpg either. I thought a V6 would do better. I put in the K&N, no help. Then Gibson hiflow catback, jet stage 2 chip, smaller crank pulley, low temp stat, and my own custom ram air intake. I now get over 20 mpg.

I am looking for headers and possibly hi flow cat.

I helped by brother with his 89 Dak 3.9L get 36 mpg hwy and low 20's in the city (CDN gallon ~3.8L). Cleaned up the tbi big time and then retrofit a 1990 air cleaner off a small block chevy w/ K&N element and inverted the lid.

It rocks!!!

I just bought a 2001 DDkta, I must tell you it burns gas a lot. I don't know what to do. Has anyone heard about the Balljoint problem on all the Dodge Dakotas and Durangos? It's a shame, you spent so much money on a car to find out all sorts of related problems.

I get 19mpg consistently in the city and about 23mpg on the freeway, if I ever drive on it. No A/C of course. That makes a big diff.
2002 SXT RC
K&N CAI, Gibson single side, 180 T-stat, 360 Air Intakez Air Hat, 3923's, MSD, and hopefully more to come.
