Subject: MSD ignition? IP: Logged
Message: i'm thinking about buying the MSD ignition for my '93 3.9 dakota....is it worth spending the $240 for the system, or should i spend it on a chip? which one is going to give me the best performance?
i currently have a TB isnstalled, with a K&N intake, along with a 3 inch catback with a magnaflow
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...budget is an issue

Message: This isn't the answer you want at all but if your budget hinges on buying or not buying a chip or an MSD unit, just save your money. Neither one is seriously going to do much for a 12 year old V6 engine. You won't feel the difference, I guarantee it. At least the MSD may improve your mileage and give you a little unmeasurable pep.
I'd put the money into a rebuild. Sorry, I'm becoming very cynical in my old age. I just tell it like it is.

Message: i do have a 93 318, but ive asked people the same question. and i got the same answer. it wont do sh!t. the only way your gonna notice it is with other mods. like more fuel, and air.. at least. the hotter spark from a msd is used to ignite more fuel faster. the stock system is fine until you get more fuel/air in there.

Message: MSD should be the next best thing to having dual spark plugs like on the 5.7. The multiple spark does a more efficient job of igniting whatever amount of air/fuel mixture you put into it. This is especially true under heavy load.

Message: Everything depends on the efficiency of your current system and how you drive. If your engine is frequently under heavy load, such as towing or racing, you will likely see a bigger difference than those that use their truck more like a passenger car.

Message: After each mod I noticed small changes nothing earth shattering. I've done the MSD6, coil, 8.0 wires, rotor, dist. cap, plugs, JBA header, dynomax muffler, IAT relocation, Inject. sync., 180 thermostat,K&N Air filter, and am waiting on a F&B TB as my next mod. It's a 95,with these mods the gas mileage has improved, oil pressure was low at idle and now is good, throttle response has improved, as has my acceleration. Overall it sounds better, drives better, the engine runs better plus I enjoyed doing it and I'm no mechanic. If you have a V6 and intend on keeping it and want the most you can get out of it then why not. If you like to tinker with your truck then it's great and you can say you did it yourself. If all you want is more power buy a V8. But remember the mods sort of compliment each other resulting in an overall performance improvement. Oh yeah, I only started my mods 2 months ago, thanks to this forum.

type in IAT MOD or IAT relocation
and you'll find all you need & then some
it's an easy mod. but not everyone notices the same gains, it's still worth a try ....
i noticed a pretty good improvment on my truck

Message: I have a MSD ignition on my 97 3.9. It was on it when I bought it a couple years ago. If it is supposed to help with fuel economy or power I would hate to see what the truck was like with out it! I get terrible mileage and have no get up and go. I wouldn't spend the money on it. Don't get me wrong I love my truck and the 3.9 is a solid engine. The cc dakota is just a heavy truck for the engine. Should a had a V8(slaps forehead).

Message: If you don't know why your performance is so lack luster, why would you advise others not to buy MSD? No ignition system is going to solve your problems. You can heap all kinds of mods on a problem engine and end up with nothing. That doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with any of the products.
I just installed an MSD 6A and coil today. Do you suppose I'm going to suddenly get poor milage and performance?

Message: I did several mods at the same time so couldn't really tell. I added a SuperChips 87 octane program, the MSD setup and an Edelbrock Pro Flow filter. On my first tank of gas I got a solid 17mpg and I certainly spent some time giving it a workout. Ask me again this weekend.

Is it the MSD, SuperChips, Edelbrock Pro-Flo or all three together?

Message: Running an MSD system, MSD-6a, Blaster coil, superconductor wires with AP3923 gapped out to 55 thousands should get you about 10 rwhp and a slight increase in mileage.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.
