Subject: Self-starting car? IP: Logged
Message: I started up my '96 Dakota this morning only to hear a
loud "metalic" squeal coming from under the hood. I
shut the engine off only to have it try to restart by itself. I
had removed the key from the switch and the starter
motor was still cranking the engine!! I grabbed some
vice-grips and pulled off the negative battery cable and
this shut everything down. When I attemped to
reconnect the battery cable, the negative pole stated
smoking!
I have seen this happen before, several years ago. A
pickup parked in my drive way just started cranking with
nobody in the car. We ran out, popped the hood and
attempted to remove battery cables to no avail. The
engine caught fire and fire dept. was summonded to put
out the fire. What causes this disasterous occurance?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Message: I have two self starting cars. I can have it start at a certain time or just use the remote to start it. It's very useful in northern states during the winter.

Message: Dodge is somewhat renowned for this problem. . From what I can gather it stems from the "Auto Shutdown Relay" circuit. A circuit which Dodge threw in to shut down the vehicle when sensors were not talking to the cpu right, most notably the crank position sensor, cam position sensor, and a few others. The ASR is wired into every F'n thing. I am currently trying to determine why my ASR is not closing, or rather opening while I'm on the Hway doing 90! It is a real pisser'.

Message: could that be the reason when i am "on it" sometimes it just kinda cuts out for a few seconds then if i let off it starts running again? (for some reason it lays out with a huge backfire though)
