Subject: Refrigerant/Compressor IP: Logged
Message: When I put refrigerant into my truck, the a/c compressor would cycle on and off. Evertime it would cycle, the guage on the refrigerant tube would drop down to low. Conversely, when the compressor was not cycling, the guage would begin to rise. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Message: My Dakota is a 1996 with 3.9 liter V6. I added R134a to the a/c system to see if the compressor would cycle. It did start and when the clutch engaged, the pressure dropped down to about 20 lbs. When the clutch stopped, the R134a pressure went up to about 65 lbs. The compressor would cycle on and off at about 1.5 sec. intervals. The compressor sounded fine and there were no other strange noises coming from it. From this info., is it possible to tell if the compressor is okay? I'm sure the system has a leak somwhere, but my main concern is if the compressor works properly or not. To be a little more specific.

Message: I have a 95 that does that too. I recently replaced the evaporator core, took the truck to a shop where they vacuumed out the a/c system for me. I noticed the same thing you did when i was filling it up with r134.
The compressor is cyling on and off based on the pressure and the low pressure switch. I noticed as I got closer to 35 PSI of r134 the longer the compressor would run before shutting off. Once I hit 35 PSI, i stopped adding and it's been working fine ever since - that was a couple of weeks ago.

Message: There is a pigtail comming out of the firewall that controls the clutch cycling. It should be the connector on the right of the group of refergerant lines and wires on the pass side. You need to disconnect the pigtail and connect a jumper. This will cause the compressor to stay on and not cycle while you add refrigerant.
