Subject: Larry, injector sync? IP: Logged
Message: I saw in one of the posts you talked about setting the injector sync using a degree wheel on the distributor. There were pics but i coulndt view them. Is there any way i could get those pics? And a better explanation how to do this? i didt fully understand how it was decribed before.

Message: there really isnt a need for a degree wheel. I suppose if you wanted to be super accurate, but you still would need to be able to monitor it from the computer that way to be accurate. if you want to set it approximately "+3" here is what you do:
1. set motor to TDC (top dead center) on the COMPRESSION stroke.
2. Remove the distributor cap
3. jump in the engine compartment and look directly over the distributor. (this may be harder on gen 3 dakotas but it can be done). There will be a small line that says Cyl.
4. loosen the distributor so you can move it freely. and position the distributor so that the line is approximately the width of the tip of the rotor before the rotor.
(the O is the rotor)
____O
5. then just tighten the distributor down put the cap and wires on and start it up.

Message: Are you saying that the distance before the rotor reaches the "Cyl" line should be about the width of the rotor tip?

Message: Wait a minute. 93dak4x4, Looking at the top of the dist. with the cap off and out of the way, the crank pulley rotated clockwise to TDC on cylinder #1, and imagining the rotor is turning as if the engine were on, is the front edge of the rotor blade coming up on the mark or did it pass the mark? The rotor blade is about 3/16" wide, are you saying that the space between the rear edge of the blade should be 3/16" after the mark? BTW, I painted the distributor mark with a white-out pen so I can see it better. Thanks 93'!

Message: Hey 93dak4x4, I forgot to ask you. After I do this "eye ball accurate" modification, how can I check to see where my injector sync is at? Do I use an error code OBD 2 computer or something? Thanks in advance.

Message: if you really wanted to know exactly what it was you would have to use some sort of scanner. larry would know what that is, he mentioned it in a post once when i was learning how to do the injector sync. but if your sync was off alot like mine, then you will notice your gain immediately. my truck ran 100% better.
I hope that helped. good luck

Message: 93dak4x4, my gas milage has gotten WORSE since I have done this mod. I did everything per your instructions a few posts ago. When I am eyeballing the rotor tip vs. the cyl line on the distributor, I am standing over the passenger side fender. Looking at the cyl line, which side will the rotor tip be on? I tightened the dist. down with the rotor being on the left side of the cyl line. Did I do it wrong? Thanks for your help.

Message: Relf
i did it just the way 93dak4x4 explained it
and i noticed a big difference (94 3.9)
"standing over the passenger side fender. Looking at the cyl line, which side will the rotor tip be on?"
it will be to the right of the Cyl line.
i did mine so that the rotor edge was just a hair before the Cyl line
the gain here will be determined where it was before setting it
when i pulled mine the rotor was Dead on the line
and after this Mod i had a nice noticable diff.
rpm's pick up alot quicker and milage has improved

Message: Just attempted this for the second time (this time with a dist. wrench) and it worked out pretty good although that damn dist. bolt was pretty hard to turn even with the right tool for it. Up to that point it's pretty easy, you just have to play around a little to get that hold-down bolt loose. My rotor was directly over the line, so I advanced it about a centimeter, pretty much it was lined up with the cap bolt hole. I fired it up, the engine seems to rev a little faster, the power gain doesn't feel like much, but it's something and it's free, so you can't go wrong.

Message: 93dak4X4, does your truck have to "learn" this new mod. after you do it? It seems like I was wasting lots of fuel after this mod., then now, it seems like my mileage is coming around again.

Message: I never really noticed an extra use of fuel when I did this. My gain was immediate. I'm glad you got it done now. sorry I didnt get back to you a little earlier, i was gone for the weekend. As for my injector sync, it was completely opposite of the way it should have been, about a rotor width on the other side of the line. so this mod helped me alot. you may not notice as big of a gain seeing yours was not as far off as mine.
