Subject: PLZ HELP! Oil pan removal! IP: Logged
Message: Followed the Haynes manual about removing the oil pan from my 1998 Dakota V6 5speed manual. Removed distributor cap, removed fan shroud, disconnected exhaust at manifolds, disconnected motor mounts, removed manual trans inspection cover. I'm jacking up the engine (actually jacking it up at the transmission with a floor jack and a 4x4 block) until all sorts of stuff hits (crossover tube for fuel inj hits firewall, transmission hits, etc...) I still can't get the pan off!!!! It's almost there, but needs just a hair more AGGGHHGGGHH!!!!
Suggestions??
drop the trans (don't really want to do this)
disconnect the trans mount and shift engine/trans backward?
Please help. I'm starting to throw my tools at walls, animals, windows....

Message: I tried jacking at the trans also and had the same result, its much easier it you get an engine lift and lift from the front side of the engine, that somehow gives you about an inch more room (cant explain it).

Message: Sounds like the right idea bigdave, unfortunately I would need the truck to rent the lift and I've allready dislodged lots of sludge in the pan, so I don't want to put it back together until the pan/pickup is clean.
Anybody else? There has got to be some backyard/redneck/scary but it works method of getting this done.
Thanks

Message: Tried for two days to get the pan out with no luck. Finally went to rent a hoist and I still had to remove the transmission mount to get the engine high enough to get the pan out. When I did WOW! Tere was about 1/2 inch of rubbery/sand sludge in the bottom of the pan. The pickup was pretty clogged up. Cleaned it all up and bolted everything back together. We will see tonight what the oil pressure is like.
I would recommend to everyone that has more than 100K miles to pull the pan and clean it out. The more I have researched thsi topic of oil pan sludge, it is not necessaraly dependant on frequency of oil changes. You could be maintaining your truck very well and still have this problem.

Message: Hey man! All I can say is that it is a BITCH to get that oilpan out. Had my oil pump go bad and needed to get the oilpan out to get to the oilpump and wrestled with it for hours until we finally could kind of tweek it out of there.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!
