I just bought a 1990 Dakota 4 wheel drive with 122,000 miles 3.9 auto with an engine that hesitates and stutters. My brother in law says driving behind it it blows alot af black smoke. I took the air cleaner off and plugged the lines going to it and started the engine and looking down the throttle body when the engine is running and every so often it blows a spurt of fuel in at an idle and when you speed it up some it does it more often. I disconnected the MAP sensor and the Oxygen sensor and there is no change, I replaced the oxygen sensor with no results. If I disconnect the TPL the engine stalls. I am at a loss as to what to try next or how to test further. I am a fairly good mechanic but this one has me stumped. HELP

im not sure exactly what you are saying with TPL? but your truck could be about anything wrong from what you said. a truck could spit and sputter from any bad sensor, could be hall effect pickup, coil, plugs, wires, cap , rotor... its hard for somebody to nail it down. being 1990 its tbi, so its probably not injectors. timing is set from distributor so i would check that with a timing light. cap, rotor, plugs, and wires should all be changed regardless, so you should eliminate that. 02sensor you have changed so thats good. i would look for a problem with fuel. maybe fuel pressure? check the fuel sys. then get back to us...

U disconnected the map and no change?

That sensor when it goes to the extreme of bad it will make it blow black.
The map when messed with will make it stall most of the time.
Atleast on my 2002 that happens and on an old jeep.
