Message: Just put a mechanical oil pressure guage on to test the factory gauge. Both indicate low numbers.
cold: 25psi idle, 40psi 3000RPM
hot: 18psi idle, 35psi 3000RPM
What do you expect from a 1998, 160K mile, with the 3.9?
Haynes manual say MINIMUM pressure is 6psi at idle and 30psi at 3000RPM.
I know it either has a restriction at the pickup, worn pump, or worn bearings.
Kinda hoping I can skirt it by running the filter for a 318 (5.2L) because it supposedly will increase the psi, and higher viscosity oil. Right now I'm running 5w30 Castrol Syntec blend.
ideas to keep the beast running without throwing $$$ in the wrong areas?
ALSO... the crappy autozone oil pressure sending unit removal socket broke my pressure sender. Will the computer freak out if I run without the gauge hooked up (hole plugged of course!)?

Message: I should add that the pressure has been this way since I bought the truck 2 months ago. It does not fluctuate like I have read in other posts. It's just low, all of the time.

Message: as for the filters... I saw a post where someone said that the "old" 318 filters were different, possibly for an 80's block?

Message: I have a 97 V6 Dak and have had the same problem start up 2 years ago. I live in the South and winters are not cold so in the summer I run 15w50 and then as winter gets here I do a blend of half and half 10w30 and 15w50. My oil preasure stays up and have had no problems.
I did switch to Moble 1 full synthetic using the same mix and my gas milage improved and when I leave my truck set for 2 days, I no longer have a problem with dry starts.

Message: Think your oil pump is worn out. I had the same problem in my Camaro with 12'000 miles. Changching the pump for few money gave me 50 % more pressure.

Message: Pulled the pan yesterday and found 1/2 inch of oily slime/crud/chunks in the sump and the screen was pretty clogged up. Cleaned it all up. I'll fire it up tonight and see what the oil pressure is like.
