I have a 95 3.9 4x4 auto, my transmission shifts very ruff from 1st to 2nd and if i am accelerating hard it will slip. I have a slight leak of trans fluid.I know nothing about transmissions what would be the best thing for me to do.

first check your tranny fluid to see if its full. (engine running and warm, check on level surface)
if it is full and looks nice and bright then i would say take it to a tranny shop for a band adjustment.

if the fluid is low then fill it and see if it corrects the problem

if the fluid is full and very dark or burnt smelling then i would take it to a tranny place for a fluid flush, and band adjustment but first ask if it is fixable.

Mine is slipping the same way!!! lemmie guess , get a little over 2500 , gets ready to shift to second , you decide to floor it , then , crack crrrrrrrrrrr , let off , goes back to normal , yeah fuggin sucks!!!

If the bands are 'lets say' out of adjustment... would this cause the motor to heat up?

Yes! That is exactly what it does. If anyone knows how to fix this problem i would be very grateful, instead of having someone charge me an arm and a leg to tell me what the problem is.

Haynes or chiltons has very easy to understand explanation as to how to adjust the bands. you might also check the autozone web site they have online repair manuals for free.

I think the best bet would be to get someone to pull the tranny out for about 150, mail it across the us to someone that rebuilds them out of frame. For about 300, they put performance clutches, flush, and rig up a tranny cooler so this dosnt happen again...

Spend another 150 to get some 'people' to shuve her back in there...

600 bucks , not very bad... Compared to what I got quoted from 'performance transmission'....... 1700... <^>yall<^>

However... ive been riding with the tranny doing this for about a couple of years now , dosnt act like it got any worse , dosnt act like it got any better... well sometimes... Probably should just save up for a conversion kit... Keep changing the tranny filter... every 2 fillups...

I BOUGHT A DAKOTA V 6 , GOT A DEAL BECAUSE OWNER WAS THINKING A 2000 $ NEW TRANNY CHANGE. THIS IS WHAT I DID.
Guys, before you spend a fortune for costly tranny repair, try a bottle of LUBE GARD RED.
Also lube gard makes a little TRANSMISSION FLUSH and DR TRANNY COOLER CLEAN (D.I.Y.)( ALL THREE COST ABOUT ELEVEN DOLLORS EACH).Available at LUBEGARD WEBSITE ( RESEARCH THEIR WEB SITE )
You may not have to use later two but if you do you may have to take pan down ( MESSY). If you do take pan down DO NOT forget to put a drain plug kit ( CAR QUEST ABOUT EIGHT DOLLORS ).
With pan down to flush find the joint in hose just under and behind radiator, will have to pull out plastic/rubber dust cover held by 6 or 8 plastic fasteners.
BEFORE TAKING PAN DOWN PUT A BOTTLE OR TWO OF TRANSMISSION FLUSH IN TRANNY THROUGH DIP STICK HOLE, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS i.e. RUN MOTOR IN ALL GEARS FOR 5 MINUTES OR SO.THEN TAKE PAN DOWN.
THE TRANNY COOLER'S ADAPTOR MAY NOT FIT. I JUST CUT THE ADAPTOR AND PUSHED PLATIC TUBE IN THE RUBBER HOSE END AND PREESED THE BUTTON IT WORKED, FLUID FROM COOLER DRAINED FROM UNDER TRANNY (PUT A BUCKET THERE)
DO NOT TRY TO UNBOLT TRANSMISSION COOLER PIPES AT TRANSMISSION.
.I DID NOT MESS WITH BANDS.ITS SHIFTING GREAT.
I GOT ALL THIS FROM RESEARCH ON THIS WEB SITE THANKS TO EVERYBODY AND LARRY SPECIALLY ABOUT HIS INPUT TIME TO TIME.

This is not the place to get cheap. The transmissions on these trucks are a little tempermental sometimes. I would definetely get your bands adjusted. I didnt even have symptoms and all of a sudden mine just decided to stop moving completely. cost me $1620 to get done (had to have it in 3 days). so pay the 80 or 100 bucks they want to have it done and go home with a deal. its alot cheaper now then when it quits all together. and yes it is a reason the motor would heat up. your radiator cools the tranny too. and that heat is all friction from slipping...that means bad mileage, extreme wear, and more money in the long run.

For those who's transmission works properly;
I have a transmission with 500,000 miles on it that says you would be wise to use Amsoil ATF.
