Subject: O2 sensor fail symptoms? IP: Logged
Message: I see guys recommending O2 sensor change out at 60K. My '99 is kissin' 80K. Thanks to this site solving for ping under load, rough idle and weak midrange response. My new Autolight magic plugs, cap and rotor, IAC service, 180 T-stat and two cans of Seafoam... she runs like a watch.
So what symptoms indicate a failing O2 sensor and is it the one near the CAT or somewhere else?

Message: poor gas milage is a sign of a bad o2 sensor. They can start going back and not throw a code - ie, it'll not be performing as efficient as a new one can but not be out of spec to cause the code.
it's recommend you check / replace them every 100k, at least that's what I go by. Mine in my 1995 lasted about 140k.

Message: Your 99 also has another one after the cat..
it will throw a code indicating
either it's failure , or failure of the cat..

Message: David what year is ur truck?
And thr 00' daks have an upstream and downstream sensor,
idk bout urs.
Sorry I can't help ya 5.2L dude.
OP make sure you don't get the bad sensor mixed with the
wrong part, upstream and downstream, or the precut
sensor(upstream) which is the one before the cat after the
headers.
I believe quad cabs have four O2 sensors.

Wrong answer. It does not depend on how many doors your truck has. It depends on year and emmissions equipment the truck came with. California or Federal depending on the year.

Message: I hav a 2000 5.9L dakota, starts up great but once
I start driving it hestitates and misfires for the
1st 5-10min then runs great. It brought a code up
P0351 indicating the ignition coil or PCM.I
replaced the igniton coil and cleared the code. I
replaced plugs wires and distributor cap, the
battery and the fuel pump. Could it be O2 sensors
going bad?

Message: First about the 4 oxy sensors. You will find that on Cali trucks or 2wd 5.9L only and maybe the 4.7s. All others have 2 oxy sensors. The one AFTER the CAT is only there to let you know when the CAT is not working or wore out and does nothing for any PCM changes or mileage or anything. The one BEFORE the CAT controls timing, mixture etc as the PCM is programmed to do. Normally if it is bad you will get a code but not always. Mileage will definitely suffer if it is bad and may cause stumbles, misfires etc etc as the PCM will not be controlling timing and fuel mixture correctly. It can never hurt to put a new one on if it is old.
