Subject: V6 won't run IP: Logged
Message: We have a 91 Dakota with a 89 V6 engine. The computer has quit for the 3rd time. It doesn't allow enough voltage to the injectors to allow fuel to flow. Any idea what is the problem and how to fix it. Thanks in advance

Message: What year computer are you running? Based on the manuals I have it should be the SMEC. Do you have fuel pressure problems? Or just voltage problems?

Message: My mechanic hot wired the electric line and got the truck to start. So therefore it appears to be a voltage problem. We got a used computer from a bone yard, but no change. It still won't start. Turns over and we have spark, but no fuel.

Message: are you sure everything is correct? motor is tbi? make sure your motor is the same year as the comp. so 89 motor, 89 computer, 91 motor, 91 comp. if its an 89 there are no injectors on the manifold just in the throttle body, so i would make sure you have everything the same.

Message: It shouldn't matter what computer/engine combo you have if they are the same engine type. 88-91 is all pre MPI and pre magnum so you should be okay. Do you have proper fuel pressure? A TBI based system should be running 14.5psi, if you have more you probably have blockage, less you need to replace the fuel pump. My 89 sundance was running great one day and then wouldn't start when I came out of Wendy's. A new TBI, egr, and timing belt later we found the fuel pump was bad.

Message: Hello, I have a 92 Dodge Dakota with one of these V6's and it was running great. Then recently it started acting up badly. It wouldn't start, and then it would start. It was running fine when it ran, then I'd be driving and it would just cut out with no warning. But, then it would restart a minute later and it would drive fine again. But, this phenomena would persist and so I took it to my mechanic and he checked the fuel pump and said it was fine, then changed the fuel filter as it was dirty, then cleaned the fuel injectors, then did a tune up and changed the plugs, and rotor, etc. It ran better for a 1/2 of a day and then it started cuttting out again, not starting again, etc. So, then he checked it again and said that the computer was bad and so, he couldn't find one to match it new, and so he took it to an Auto Electrical Specialist who rebuilt the computer and the it seemed to run better for a day or so. Then the same problem of cutting out and not starting came up again. Then, I took it back again and they repalced the timing chain, the crank sensor and one other thing and gave it back to me and it started better and was running fine, but then the same porbs began to show up, and I broke down and had to get towed to my mechanic. He then changed the spark plug wires, and some air change sensor and said it was all better and it ran better and then on the way home the same problem began to show up. The problem is not starting sometimes, but then on the 4th time of cranking it started and then I drove 20 miles home on the freeway and as I was going up the hill to my house it cut out twice. But I managed to get it restarted and drove it home. So, it does seem to be ruinning better and does start better but won't start on the first turnm, but usually on the third or fourth attempt, but still cuts out without any warning once in awhile and will not start on the first crank like it used to, and on top of that the fuel gauge stopped working which just happened during all of this. It was working fine before. Whoa is me!!! This is driving me crazy!! Additionally, I had the fuel pump replaced back in mid June and after that drove it 6000 miles from Florida to Southern Calif-ornia which was before all of this craziness started and it ran great! as I drove it across country. Does anyone have any advice or tips? Thanks, Steve (Previously happy Dak owner)

Message: Sounds like you might have a wire harness problem, or corrosion/break in the wiring for your fuel level sensor. For the not starting prob, when it doesn't start, have you tried a pressure check at the fuel rail. I'm not sure if the 92's had a schrader valve on the fuel rail or not, so you might have to tap into the main fuel line. Other than that, have you done anything to the fuel pressure regulator? Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think yours is on the fuel rail itself.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: Right below the underhood fusebox, about 8" down the harness is a splice (#115), from that splice, it powers the PCM, Fuel Pump, and Coil. All four wires are Red/white, one comes from the fusebox, two go right back up to the relays, and the fourth goes the opposite direction to the PCM. You will have to unbolt the fusebox, pull it out of the way, and cut open the tape on the harness to find the splice.
usually if it is this splice the tape will be coroded green when you take it off. This is a common problem of you model dak.

Message: Got a 97 V6 3.9 and with 90K on the clock and am having same problems. It starts fine and idles and works perfects and all of a sudden the engine dies or misfires for a while before stopping at all. I does not not restasrt immediatly but after some secs it starts fine again. Sometimes I drive fine for several days without any failure and then it comes back again again. The Chrysler dealer after several attempts to solve the problem now says its the computer. I some others experience can you please help? It's frustrating.
Thanks,
Gunther

Message: MikeO, I'm currently working on my 91 V6 with same problem.
Within 10 minutes of starting after truck has set for more than a
couple of hours, the engine will die instantly like if the key was
turned off. Once fully warmend-up, no problems.
Found current draw of 250mA from tachometer while truck not
in use. This was killing my battery while truck sits unused for
days or weeks. Unpluged fuse #7 which is the horn and
tachometer fuse for a temporary fix till I can rewire tachometer
power lead to a swithced power source.
Also, check the splices that come from your Auto Shutdown
Relay in your Power Distribution Box under the hood. There will
be a Red to Red / White wire splice which is power to the
computer and relay. There is also a Green / Black wire splice
from the ASD relay that powers the Coil, Fuel Pump, O2 sensor,
and other important circuits. The wire splices are about 8 to 12
inches from Power Distribution Box going towards computer.
I think the combination of not driving the truck enough to keep
battery charged, the tachometer constantly pulling and
weakning the battery, and a weak Green/Black wire splice is my
problem. I think once the truck runs enough to get the battery
charged, that this enough to overcome the weak wire splice as
well as maybe a not so good electric system period.
Good Luck. I've tested and replaced A LOT. You will see many
postings of this type of problem. I'm hoping for good results by
replacing the battery and reworking the splice and tachometer.
