Subject: K&N Filter
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a bone stock 99 Club Cab w/ 3.9. I've serviced this truck with kid gloves since day one. I was thinking about purchasing a K&N filter to replace the standard paper type filtere. My question is are they worth the $$? Did they help your gas mileage and/or performance?

Thanks

My only mod on my 92 Dak club cab V-6 4WD 4-spd auto is a K&N drop-in filter. It was $40, plus $10 for the recharge kit. It has made ZERO difference in power and gas mileage for me. Absolutely no gain. It is a little throatier when I step on the throttle.

I'd do Larry's mods, starting with the fuel sync and the timing advance. Just haven't found the time yet myself. But I get 20-21 mpg highway right now, so these trucks have untapped potential.

Thanks Bob. That's what I figured. My gas mileage is not too bad - I get about 18MPH combined city/hwy. I probably need to change the plugs - they haven't been changed in about 50K and it's probably time for a new cap, rotor, and plug wires. It's got 110K miles on it, so I'm sure it's overdue for these things.

I have a 95 3.9L. I pulled the entire stock air box/hose out and put on a edelbrock 10" open element air hat with a K&N filter.

I have better throttle response and about the same (slightly better) gas milage as stock. I drive it harder and still get same milage.. that's not too shabby,

running all stock except autolight plugs and autolight wires and synthetic oil i get 17.5/up to 25 highway (see post "happy with gasmilage").

Just remember, even if it doesn't help your power or gas mileage, it still has a One million mile guarantee! You just clean it and drop it back in, it'll pay for itself in 45,000 miles (equivalent of 3 air filter changes). I'm with Dan, the stock air box is extremely restrictive, the K&N will help get more air to the engine regardless of whether or not you notice it.

The K&N drop-in filter is at least one inch smaller in diameter than the factory filter. As to the million-mile warranty, read the conditions - you will never get a replacement under their terms. Also, it's a LOT more work and more inconvenient to have to wash, dry and re-oil a filter - you're down for a couple of hours besides the labor. A new filter drops right in in seconds. Given that the drop-in K&N has no performance benefits, there would seem to be no advantage to switching.

I wouldn't say no performance benefits. I have better throttle response. Isn't that a performance benefit? I can drive it harder now (though i do not do that all the time) and still keep my gas milage. Isn't that a performance benefit?

That's why i kept the filter that came with my air hat, i will use that in the 24 hours that my k&n is being cleaned.

And as JB pointed out, cost benefits over time.

Depends where u drive with ur k&n also...

I drive a lot of back roads and when it was ready for my first cleaning it was shreded.

So now i run a big diesel paper filter. There is no performance differance running with or without it except with it i have filtered air.

I also noticed with the k&n i needed oil changes sooner from all the dirt it let by and i needed to clean my iac a lot more often.

"I wouldn't say no performance benefits."

I would.

"I have better throttle response."

No change at all with my truck. That's why I say no benefit - gas mileage and power are just the same as before for me. But hey, knock yourself out and spend more money in our economy.

You know I will! We are not in a recession!

And because you saw no benefit, others may depends on what parts/mods they have installed.

the dyno doesn't lie, check out the k&n website.

I put a K&N drop in on my 3.9 truck shortly after i got it. While I could see no measurable MPG improvement, throttle response and pep was noticeably better!! For 50 bucks would do it again.

it will maybe take an hour at the longest to wash out and clean a K & N filter. I bet bob lincoln is one of those people that always has to go to jiffy lube to have them change his oil. If it takes you more than a half hour to an hour if you completely let it dry on a cold winter day, then your retarded. you probably can't even change your battery. idiot, learn to work on your truck, also maybe there isn't any performance gains, but I offroad my truck and instead of replacing my filter 2-3 times a month, I can jsut clean it out in under an hour, and if it gets wet it will not clog up and not let any air through like a regular paper filter, so bob why don't you take your not good think you know everything but can't even change your own oil somewhere else!!!

I changed from the stock air box to the edelbrock 10" open air assembly with a k&n air filter as well, and i must say from the stock air box this is a definate inprovement, it feels like it has more power when trying to pass on the highway, it is louder when you step on it and just plain looks cooler than the stock setup, if cleaning the k&n seems problematic just buy a cheap one that you can put on it while your cleaning the k&n

My truck looks like it was in a knife fight, and lost!

You lose. Pay up. I've been working on cars and trucks for 27 years, have done more oil changes than you've wiped your ass.

I can recommend a good adult literacy program for you, if indeed you are an adult.

All u would need to do is attach the filter directly to the air hat to get what u want.

Ive made multiple designs and have finally settled on one i want....
I just fabed my own air hat with 4" tubing going into a rubber 45 that holds a tube the filter slids on.(if i didnt do it that way the filter wouldnt fit) Ive hit 6" deep puddles at 25 mph and have had no problems.
Heres a link if ur curious of my setup.

The Filter Address
IP: Logged

Message:
I bet Bob is ole Honest Abe's younger brother.

2 score and 7 years ago, Bob's fathers brought forth on this dakota a new air filter, conceived of paper and dedicated to the proposition that all filters are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great filter war, testing weather that dakota or any dakota so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. We are met on a great website of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of it's final resting place for those who died here that the dakota might live. This we may, in all propriety do. But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave mechanics, living and dead who strugged here have hallowed it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remembenr what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.

It is rather for us the living, we here be dedicated to the great task remaining before us--that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave their last full measure of devotion--that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this dakota shall have a new birth of air, and that Diamler Chrysler Corporation of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from earth.

:)
