The rear end is gone! The place working on it said it would be cheaper to just find the whole rear axle because labor to do the ring and pinion, spider gears, and bearings would cost a LOT ($55 an hour). The people I bought the truck said nothing was wrong with it and it seemed fine, but they were wrong or knew that something was wrong and didn't say anything. All else I'll just have to sell the truck as is and take a loss, sad thing is it's a very nice truck. We're just all pretty upset by all this because it was hard enough for me to afford the truck let alone buy a whole new rear axle. Too bad the lemon law don't apply to private part sales. Anyway, does anyone know what I could do? It's a 1997 Dodge Dakota V-6 Magnum and the gear ratio is 390. ANY help I can get I'd be very thankful for. Thanks all for your time.

Do you know what specifically is damaged?

The cost of just installing new gears, flushing out the rear end of debris and putting in all new parts is around $600-900.

Do you have any junk yards/wreckers by you? www.car-part.com might hook you up with a rear end too.

How long have you had the truck? If you can prove the previous owners knew of the problem and you asked if anything was wrong and they didn't tell you, then you have a legal case.

Otherwise, check some salvage yards as another mark suggested. Check some local parts stores and ask the people that work if they know where you can get a new rear end. The guys and gals at all of the parts stores here are always helpful like that.

Is the place you have looking at it an independent shop? You may find other shops to get quotes. I've gotten quotes from multiple shops and it be $400+ difference.

As a general rule, dealers are the most expensive, then napa service centers then independents.

Just make sure u go to a place that can setup the rear end properly. All the stealerships here cant repair worth a darn... long story short under warrenty they setup the rearend wrong and the truck ate the gears and bearings in 6,000 miles. I almost had them under lemon law then they sayed i abused it and tryed voiding my warrenty.
