Message: you gain horsepower with headers
ported heads or not
ported heads =
should yield a higher hp&torq. gain
but keep in mind that extra HP & Torq. is moved up the power band

Message: It doesn't sound like you are a true Hot Rodder. Headers are probably the cheapest mod you can do that will give you a gain in horse power. It will be different for every motor. Depending on the motor you could gain anywhere from 5 to maybe 25 horsepower. The headers allow the motor to breathe more efficiently. A "Souped up" motor would gain a lot from a set of good headers. A stock V6 Dakota will not gain much. The question is are you trying to shave 3/4's of a second off your quarter mile run or are you just cruising around town? It’s the combination of several mods that you will benefit from. Such as a set of headers combine with a cool air system. Maybe a gain of 15 horse power. Considering your Dakota is probably produce only 170 horses, an extra 15 would be a good improvement. The history of Hot rodders has been going on since before you or I was born. Trying to squeeze the most from your motor with the least amount of dollars has always been a challenge.

Message: The headers should help your truck. It would help the horsepower. If you haven't already dualed out the exhaust with a larger diameter tailpipe or go with a larger diameter single pipe. (Someone might help me recommend a size) than stock. This will help with the breathing and gain a few horses. A high flow muffler will help too. It may be the rest of the system is restricting the extra gains from the headers. Hope this helped.

Message: Good rule of thumb is 2 1/2" v6 and 3" v8.
2 1/2" for the 3.9 is enough and 3" is way to much. I speak from personal experience cause i ran a 3" gibson and am now back to the stocker. I have more low end with stocker and a little less high end from 3500 +
