Subject: 96 Dak idle problem after restart IP: Logged
Message: Hi!
I have a 96 Dak 3.9L Automatic that has a problem idling on restart. I purchased this truck in March 2005. It had 85550 miles on it. It ran perfect. Well, when it came time to refuel, I put ethanol in it. It started to run bad, back fire stalls, etc. My 98 lumina does the same thing on ethanol. It will run only on regular unleaded. I don’t know why this should bother, but it does. Anyway, I have ran several tanks of regular thru it now, plus 2 Chevron techron injector cleaner in it. It has finally come out of the popping and banging. Maybe the ethanol or cleaner knocked some carbon lose. The problem I am still having is at idle. If I go out in the morning and start the truck, it pops right off and idles great. It runs fine down the road. It is when you go and stop, shut off the engine and restart. It will shutter and die. It gets progressively worse. If you give it gas to overcome this it is fine. It runs down the road fine. I get an occasional check engine light. It has code 51 and P0171. Both pointing to a lean mixture of fuel. I bought a Haynes manual and have checked both O2 sensors and they seem fine. Correct ohms, voltages, etc. I have replaced plugs, gapped at .40, still have intermittent problem. I have looked on this forum and many with similar idling problems go after the O2 sensor (front one) and I see the IAC. I have cleaned both O2 sensors with air hose. Currently for the last week, I have no check engine light, I still have the codes, and it still runs rough on idle after restart.
Does anyone have any ideas on this problem? Which O2 sensor should I change?
Thanks!

Message: No, I have not. Is it hard to do? Do you use carb cleaner?
Thanks!

Message: I cleaned the IAC. It had greyish brown powder on the end of the plunger. I cleaned it up with Carb Cleaner. I did spray Carb Cleaner into orfice where it goes. It looked relative clean. I reinstalled IAC and took for a test drive. Hard to start at first, had to give gas, but once down the road, it ran fine. Shut off after test spin. Still stalls out and dies on restart.
Now what??
Thanks!

Message: Check throttle position sensor voltage with throttle closed, engine off and ignition turned to ON. Should be about 0.7 volts or so. Watch voltage as you open throttle, should increase smoothly.
Make sure plugs are gapped at .040 and not .40 8)

Message: I checked the throttle position sensor voltage as described above. Here is what I had.
Engine off, key on, throttle closed 0.72 volts;
Slowly advance throttle to fully open, voltage travels to 3.9 volts. According to Haynes manual the TPS is functioning properly. NOTE: Engine was still hot from operation.
Spark plugs appear to be gapped at .40. Is less better?? By your .40 8, it is very critical???
I did replace plugs. I used Champion. What brand is best??
Now what??
Thanks!
