Subject: Fuel Problem? IP: Logged
Message: Okay guys, I have searched and I have read, but now I need some more input. Here is the deal. I bought this '93 Dakota with a 3.9 V6. It just had a fuel pump put in it because it wouldn't start. However, I have only had this truck for 1 week and twice it has not started. It happens only after it had been running for a little while, kinda like on a short trip. BUT, if I let it sit for a few hours or overnight, it fires back up like nothing was ever wrong. Now, we bled the fuel rail by pushing in the schrader valve, then turned the key to the on position. No fuel pump whine and no fuel back to the rail. I swapped the A/C Relay and the fuel pump relay and no change. I did nothing with the Auto Shutdown Relay as I had no idea what it was. I am going to look at the harness on the drivers side tomorrow but needed some more possible options as to what might be wrong. I am very doubtfull it is the pump. Thanks.

Message: The ASD relay IS the relay next to the A/c relay. It sends the input voltage to the coil when the EMC lets it. You checked it if I understand you. To be certain if this relay is good, just check for a spark when you turn it over. So is there gas coming out of the injectors? Lets see, new fuel pump and no gas at the fuel rail? I could be wrong but sounds like the fuel pump isn't pumping. Fuse bad, circuit short, ASD relay dead, EMC fried, or dead pump.

Message: Okay, here is the deal. The truck had this condition when it was sold to my friend. They figured it was the pump so they changed it with a used pump (they own a salvage yard). I bought the truck last week, drove it home, went outside to start it for my wife to hear and no start. We left for dinner, came home, and it fired back up. Saturday morning, drove the truck 25 miles, parked it for 15 minutes, no start. Waited overnight and she fired back up. When you push in the schrader valve on the fuel rail, fuel sprays out at a pretty good flow until it is empty so I think I have eliminated the pump from the equation. If it was the pump, their would be no pressure up there. I am 99% sure it is the pick-up/stator in the distributor. We will find out here shortly.

Message: I have that same issue with my 94 dak/automatic V6-144K. But mine will gradually gain pressure over night, maybe about 15 psi. But not enough to turn over. I had checked the splice, ASD relay, fuel pump relay,Checked to see if there is spark and there is. I replaced the sync switch place(pick up coil, distributor cap and rotor. Still, I hear no whirling from the tank, just the normal clicks from the engine compartment. Checked the schrader valve again and only sprayed fuel about 1/2" high then no more fuel. I have not taken the bed off the truck yet to get the tank. I had just filled the tank, then my truck would not start at the gas station. What a bummer. Had it towed to my house, from the gas station!
Problem started with the usual, sputter, cough, rough idle and then die. Replaced the IAC since it was dirty and cleaned out the TB. Checked the TPS and the voltage and ohms indicate it is working fine. Cleaned out the IAT and the tip looks real good. Checked the EGR and it is not sticking. Took it out to see if it does not seat, well it does seat well. Checked all vacuum lines and are in good order.

Message: Well, I changed the pick-up/stator on the distributor and it did NOT fix the problem. Drove the truck to work today, then home, parked it, went outside 10 minutes later and crank,crank,crank...no start. Cycled the switch on and off a few times and she fired up with much hesitation. Spoke to a Dodge mechanic and he told me the pump was not holding pressure at the rail. Need to replace the pump. I will do this Saturday morning.

Message: i wouldnt go replacing the pump because a tech said to. they usually dont know their a$$ from a hole in the ground. now there are a few things to check for. first the pump should kick on briefly when you turn on the key to the on position then kick off almost immediately. second if that works check the pressure at the fuel rail, though it may not gain much if the truck does not fire so try turning the key on and off a few times to prime the system. next check for any fuel leaks and check the fuel filter for clogging. on the 93 model year their is a second filter besides the on in the tank on the driver side frame rail under the bed. if its not a fuel problem then check for spark, if their is no spark then think coil, pick up sensor, crank pos sensor, or an electrical problem. if all of those things to look at don't get the problem found then post again, there is plenty to look at here....dont just look under the hood and call it good either...get dirty. :)

Message: He is right. I am going to lift the bed off the truck Sat morning and test the pump to see if it is it. Just unable to do it at this moment. Mine will not even fire up at all.Just boggle then die. Checked the fuel rail and no pressure.

Message: I got a 93 dakota v6, engine turns over but doesn't start. I checked the wiring harness for the 3 to 1 joint and rebuilt the joint. I bit the bullet and bought a new fuel pump assembly and installed it, what a bitch to change. Still NO gas to the fuel filter. How do I check the fuel pump RELAY to see if that is the problem?

Message: You can swap the fuel pump relay with any other that you
know is working to see if that is the problem.
