Subject: Pinion seal belching?

I parked my truck the other day in my clean garage spot and come
out a couple hours later and notice a really big puddle under the
differential. My truck has been sitting for the past few weeks and I
only drove it on a two mile trip at city speeds. I always back into
my spot. I look at the cover and it didn't leak from there, it leaked
from where the drive shaft meets the differential. The puddle was
oil. I took it to the shop, they said they didn't see anything wrong
but did replace the pinion seal anyway.

Ever have this happen to you?

I've replaced the pinion seal 2X on my Cherokee, once on my Comanche and once on my cougar just for that reason. If your vent tube is not plugged, then its just normal wear on the seal.

Ok I finally checked the vent tube on the axle. There was a plastic
cap tightly attached to the end of the rubber tube. Now just how is
this supposed to let internal pressures get out?

I removed the cap. We'll see what happens. Knowing my luck the
entire axle empty out now.

Amazing I'm the only one in Dakota land that's had this happen.
Guess I should have put "hey Larrry" in the thread title.
