Subject: differential oil and brakes

Wanted to know if there is anything special I need to know as far as changing my differential oil. The dealer tried luring me in to get it done but wanted something like $250 to do it. Forget that!! I do all my preventative maint. on the truck. Guess i will need a gasket and suggestions on brand and weight gear oil. I've got 43k on it by the way. Also wanted to bleed the brake lines, they seem spongy! Brakes are good yet. Is bleeding done like any other brake job? thanks everyone

Do the differential yourself. No gasket is used, they use silicone to seal it back on. You could hand pump it out or just go the messy route. I used Mobil 1 75W-90 to refill.

There is a Mity Vac brake bleeder that will do the trick for a one man job.

is this a bleeder on the master cylinder or something you have to buy. how do you do this? if it's not to lengthy can you please post. is the gear oil in the manual tranny hard to do. I might as well do that right away too. When you fill the differential, do you just fill till it gets to the plug? thanks

I have always used Silicone RTV (blue, grey, black, red, whatever) on my differentials. I suppose you could drive it immediately, but I like to wait an hour or so. I'm not exactly sure on the level for the diff oil - some are filled to the hole, some specify 1/2 below the hole. I use synthetic gear lube and then never change again unless you syspect water entry. (water fioring during off-roading) as far as bleeding the brakes, you dont need to bleed the master cylinder unless 1) the fluid level got so low the master cylinder was empty or 2) you replaced the master cylinder. bleeding the brakes is done by 1) spray pb blaster or some type of penetrating oil on the bleed screws first, have someone apply (moderate) pressure to the brake pedal while you open the bleed screw. start with the RR brake, then LR, then RF, then LF. when your helper's foot has pushed the pedal all the way to the floor - make sure they hold the pedal down while you close the bleed screw. have then pump up the brake pedal and repeat the process until the brake fluid flow clear and without bubbles. repeat for all 4 brakes. check the fluid level often in the Master cylinder so you done run dry and suck air

I was told about 2.25 quarts and 75w-140w. I will probly just go with the 75w-90w like posted earlier. can i use the same oil in my manual tranny as in the differential or are they different? I hope if i go synthetic that it will help cut down some of the noisy shifting from gear to gear.
