Message: Just got my Superchips tuner and was curious about the "Performance" setting. Says in the manual that you have to run at least 91 Octane. Is this the truth or can you get away with 87 -89?
I know its not all that much more for the premium, but with the prices so high, it would be nice to know the real deal.
P.S. not a bad increase in power on the 87 setting that I have now, but would love to try the "performance" setting.

Message: You can always try it and see if you start pinging. If you do, just change back to economy until the tank is empty.

Message: I was thinking the same thing, but thought maybe someone who had already tried it might know. I was also wondering about putting in the octane boost to increase a regular tank o' gas, but dunno if that will work.
any thoughts??

Message: Octane boost will work. When I had my superchips programed for max. performance I ran 89 octane with no problems. I am currently runing the 87 octane (regular) with only a small loss of power and seem to get slightly better mileage in city driving. With 159,000 miles on the motor I am getting 18 to 20 mpg city and 22-25 mpg highway.

Message: When I talked to Dan (Daffydak) about it he said he thought he had enough 91 octane in the tank for it to run alright and when he switched it over to performance it sounded like the engine was rattling apart from the extreme pinging. He ended up having to go and use a bunch of octane booster... you can try switching it over without a full tank of 91 octane in there. The worst that would probably happen as long as you didn't try and drive it that way is you'd end up having to switch back temporarily.

Message: I will give it a shot with 89 and see what happens, if I get alot of chatter and pinging I will switch back on the side of the road.
I guess I really should'nt be bitching about this, I mean the cost to play ya know.
Even the "87" setting is pleasantly suprising. I feel more power and notice the RPM's a touch higher at cruising speed.
We will see

if that is true your tranny is slippin. that means it is going bad or the converter is not lockin up and that'll cost ya at the pump.

Does it allow u to add or pull timing?
Thanks

Message: The superchips adjusts the tranny shift points automatically and isn't user adjustable.
My tranny can't be slipp'n as it had 10k on it w/ no signs of problems, or slippage at all, it grabs like a monkey on a cupcake.
What i mean is the superchips tuner has effectivly changed the tranny firmness and shift points so in the "performance" mode your tranny is running a couple o' RPM higher at cruising speed so you don't Kick down when you need to accel.
I can't say enough about how much "Usable" power this thing gave me.
Best bang for the buck that I have seen a long time. You can put on cold air and spacers and a long list of other "ebay" mods and not see as much power as this little tuner can give you w/ no grease on your hands to boot.

Message: Just to feed my curiousity I put the truck back to stock and the tranny went back to its misserablely weak state, 1500 RPM at 60, put the performace setting on again... 1800 RPM at 60.
Usable power right back up to "almost Torquy" from "Hopelessy weak".
let ya know about milage after a couple of weeks of real world driving.

The only possible way for this to happen is if the torque convertor is not locking up or it isn't in overdrive. There is nothing magical about SC. This is basic mechanics.

Message: and there's no way to change your rpm from 1500 to 1800 at the same speed with just computer flash, that has to be a physical change in tire size, gearing, etc. maybe just without the timing advance of the superchip program it felt like it was lugging more?
i had a superchips microtuner on mine, but wasnt wild about the performance, so i sold it and put the money towards 4.10 gears. much better mod for the money, and i dont have to run premium.

Message: Thanks for answer my question...
Ive been thinking about getting one but since it advances timing...
I have:
180 stat
3923 plugs
modified crank sensor to pull timing
put iat back into manifold
Belly pan is good
That just takes me out of pinging. I ran all the diff grades gas with no real noticable effect.
Looks like ill have to do a search...
