Message: Well on my 99 all I did was use a wrench on it and it loosened right up after TAPPING it with a hammer a couple of times. I didn't have to brace the fan or anything else. I want to say it's a 36mm wrench, there is a standard size that works also. It was $20 at Ace.

Message: I just did mine a month ago. My pulley did not have bolts for the standard loaner wrench at AutoZone. Rather mine had 4 small unthreaded holes. Needing the truck working on Monday morning was a necessity, and most of my buddies were unavailable to help. I ended up making a tool out of some 2' rebar. I ground both ends down on my bench grinder until each end would fit in the pulley holes. I folded it in half then took the pointy ends and put them in the vise and hammered the rest of the tool 90 deg. It looked like your first two fingers with the last joint on each finger bent straight down. I was able to get the flat wrench inthe AutoZone kit and the new tool in the tight space. I did have to hammer the wrench to beak it free, but the tool held the pulley just fine. And even though the new water pump had holes like the old one, they were in a different place on the pulley. All I had to do was spread the fingers until the points lined up with the holes in the new pump.
This board has been a tremendous help, thanks!

Message: I had to use heat from a torche in order to get mine off, it took quite a bit of force and was quite awkward. Also a '98 Dak.

Message: I just did mine a week ago on a 98. Get a fan clutch wrench. You can pick one up at about any auto parts store. You lock the fan and then just turn the nut. Mine came off without any problem. One thing to watch is that when you get the pump off, you have to remove a metal hose going to the heater. I couldn't get mine off and had to take it to the auto parts store and they heated the pump and pulled it off. good luck. It's not hard at all with the right tools, just spend the money on the tools and you will not have the frustration.
