Subject: Engine light mystery IP: Logged
Message: My '01 QC (3.9 auto stock) just flipped 41k miles and the cute little yellow engine outline idiot light came on. Now I remember on my '93 Dak, I was told not to give that a second thought; I was told that the light is activated by miles since the last computer reset (that only happens when you do it yourself, or pay the teck the $60 to connect his code reader and reset the code...).
I have noticed no difference in the '01's driving behaviors, nor any changes in noises or motor function.
Anyone know if the little 'check engine' light (based on nothing more than mileage) scam is still programmed into the chip? Or should I be running to the code-reader?
Thanks,
Eric in VA

Message: Thanks! I'll try the gas cap and if it presists, the Auto Zone code pull and take it from there.

Message: the gas cap will trip it but it will usually reset itself after a little while if you just reinstall the cap tight.

Message: I would never screw around with check engine lights and not getting them checked out soon. The camshaft position sensor and others can go out and throw a MIL and could leave you stranded. Careful with autozone they don't look up the codes very well, or their guide is no good. I went there once and I have a 99 V6 Dakota and they tried to tell me my glow plugs were bad. That's when I bought my own scanner.

Message: the light on the 93 was indead a "reminder" to have a tuneup done and was milage activated. It was a "feature" of OBI the newer since 96 and therefore in your 01 light means you got a sensor telling the computer a voltage that is out of range, meqning a sensor is detecting something wrong, or the sensor has failed.
DO NOT waste your money on a gascap without having a OBII scan tool put to the under the dash connector, as you may well find out that what is wrong has nothing to with the cap. if it is the cap it will code P0442 if it codes something else then, well, it is something else.
