Subject: P0720 and Transmission Shifting
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello,

I have a 99 Dakota with V-6. The transmission will not upshift from 1st to 2nd unless I let off the gas . This only happens for the first shift after I start it. I had diag codes P0138 (oxygen sensor) and P0720 (speed sensor). I replace the oxygen sensor which eliminated P0138. The P0720 still shows up occasionally. Should I replace the OSS sensor (I believe it is on the rear diff for my year?) or just bring it to a transmission place and let them figure it out?

Thanks.

Chris

I just recently had the same thing happen...same symptoms and it threw a code for the speed sensor. Go buy the sensor and change it yourself. It'll take all but about 10 minutes...and most of that time spent is topping off your fluid level. Swapping the actual sensors is super quick even if you're dumb like me. Just be aware that when you unscrew that sensor and pop it out of place, it sorta acts as a drain plug to your transmission and tranny fluid is gonna poor all over your head if you're not real quick at switching them. Yes, I learned that the hard way.

I think it cost me around $28 for the sensor at Autozone.

I am curious...I am having the same problems on my DAK.

Did replacing the OSS help with the shifting problem?....does the shifting cause the engine light on or it the shifting in result of the Bad sensor. also is it ok to drive with the light on?..and OSS not replaced.

Also curious if the OSS could be an indication of a bad tranny

Any information wil be helpfull
