Subject: Stupid tranny, again. Need help...Larry? IP: Logged
Message: Okay, My last message said that my transmission was running perfectly, finally, with OD and TC lockup. I must not be allowed to have anything perfect for me or something. My tranny s*** all over me again (sorry for my language). I have already taken the truck on several little trips here and there, the longest about 50 miles in one trip, but I was coming back from a town named Urbana (15 miles away) and the truck felt like it was bogged down all of the sudden for about a second, my passenger didnt notice. Things were fine until I had to slow down to turn onto another road.
As I accelerated, the truck shifted from first to second, the it made clacking noises and grinding noises. It felt like I upshifted two gears and the engine slowed me down hard, or like I pressed the brake pedal mildly. Then the tires barked as the truck came to a hard stop. I was so freaked out, and I tried accelerating once more. After it shifted into 2nd (with a slight delay) the truck would slow down hard like you pressed the brake hard. Its impossible to go into 3rd. I have a feeling the transmission is locking up.
We towed it home and drove it down the driveway in 1st. The engine, while idling in any gear sounds fine. The transmission doesnt make any noise (maybe the usual soft ticking). The linkage is fine and there is enough fluid in the tranny. Everything appears fine, untill you drive it. My dad test drived it and I could hear the truck screech to nearly a stop as he drove it down the road. It started to do this even in 1st as he came up the drive way. Sometimes, he couldnt even accelerate.
Does anyone know what the heck is wrong? Is it time to send the tranny back again (an hour away)? Can anything be replaced so we dont have to take it back out? The only thing we didnt do to it is put a new filter in the tranny and flush the system. This shouldnt be a problem, right?
This is sort of short notice because we are going to drop the tranny as soon as I submit this. If anyone has even a clue as to what is wrong, please reply as soon as possible, please. We have to drop the driveshaft and the crossmember and disconnect stuff, so there is time if anyone objects us taking the transmission out. I will be checking often. Thank you so much!!!

Message: sounds like the one way clutch or sprag has broken,
if this sprag has broken it may have broken the trans case also,
not flushing the trans cooler and lines can/will cause this, dirt gets into this sprag and locks it up causing the rear wheels to lock up when the trans shifts into second gear
i,m not saying thats what happen but it sure sounds it,you won,t know until the trans has been dissamblied
good luck

Message: Hey vern. Thanks for replying. I dont know a huge lots on the internals on an automatic transmission. What is the sprag and the one-way-clutch? How are these supposed to oporate and what are they supposed to do? Where are they located?
When we dropped the pan, there were large amounts of filings, small bits of metal, and either copper or brass flakes on the bottom. The magnet caught some of it, but not much. After we drop it, we will try to flush the cooling line and use a little compressed air. what type of metal do you think is the sprag made of? Maybe the flakes are a sign of sprag or one-way-clutch failure.
If it is this sprag or the one-way-clutch, how much would it be to get it fixed or get a new one? Can it be done yourself or does it need to be done by a pro? Does this need to be done only when the whole transmission is rebuilt? Is it worth it to get it fixed, or should I go and look for another transmission (probably used)? Thanks for your help. Time to back out there and continue pulling the thing.....
