Subject: 1989 Dakota 4x4 auto 3.9l to 5.2l IP: Logged
Message: Hey I have been looking all around for info on swapping my tired old 3.9l 4x4 Auto for a 5.2l. My Main question is will my truck have the adjustments for the motor mounts like in the 1991 trucks? I love this truck and don't really want to drop another 3.9 into it, my old one had 150,000 miles on it when I got it and always seemed really weak. I can buy a '89 3.9 with 72,000 and a 2 year parts/labor warranty for $630. Should I just do that because of ease of install? Another thing would it be easier to use a carburated 318 to avoid the computer stuff?? Just looking for your opinions, I'm hurting without my ride, but I can manage for awhile without it. I have about $1000 in the stereo alone =( hehe but thats about all I can spend on this swap. Any info will be awesome

Message: I am skeptical about a V8 having enough room to fit under your hood. It might be too big of an engine to fit in the first place. You should be able to fit a V6 Magnum engine in there however. But doing all of that means playing around with the computer, electronics, transmission, etc. and you are spending more and more money. I'm happy with that Gen I V6 engine. Do you have any mods?

Message: Nope no mods at all, well I removed the smog equpiment and the cat, I have a single glass pack on it at the moment, I live in Iowa so no worries =). I know I could fit a 318 into it easy enough, the Shelby Dakota proves that, and the Gen II Dakotas came with the 318 option. I just recieved a ICQ from my Brother in law who can hook me up with a 360! hehe man I must be crazy for even considering that, but it would be a project. There is a website where someone swapped a 3.9 for a 360 here is a link http://cc.ysu.edu/~s0234969/newsletter_dak.html it looks like a lot of work, but just imagine the next time you pull up to a Z-71 or a Ford at a stop light, that would be so cool!

Message: hey tigerdak
the 318 will fit with some work
look at the shelbys as he said
aperanly its jsut a matter of swapping in an electric fan instead of the usual kind, plus taking the fan off alone gave the shelby 5 more hp than it would have had with the normal fan, or so the story goes

Message: I have also heard that the 318 will fit in the GenI daks. Thats is all I think about now. I have heard that the fan has to go and an electric one goes in. Plus I heard that some guys get a 2 or 3in cowl hood to hold a bigger intake. Or a body lift will do. Right!!!!!! But I am pretty sure that old 318s will plug right in though. Look at walt Ing site. he says the mounts match right up. I hope it can be done. I hate my 3.9 weaker engine. Its fine for mow, but eventually it will go. Good Luck in you hunt.

Message: Yes I'm familiar with the Shelby Dakota's engine sizes of 318. I thought you were referring to the big block 350's and even bigger! I know a guy in idaho that did a 318 swap. he hasnt got a website documenting everything, but it sure runs awesome.

Message: i think i saw some place that you will need an oil pan from the 91 318 dakota 2wd which is no longer made. also the oil pump. or else you will be making your own. ive been looking into this for a while now. its kind of on the back burner now untill i finish my 4x4 dak and have the extra cash and time. i have just about everything to do it so far.

Message: you can bolt a 318 in with atruck oil pan,but check to see if its a cast or steel crank, cast is ext.balance, steel int.,if its cast the torque converter will need to be balance, plus you,ll need tobuild motor mount pieces they are different and exst. manifolds exit in the rear on 3.9,s and in the center on full size p/u.the trans. are the same bolt pat.PS check with MP for mounts and balance kit....
