Subject: Hard shifting to reverse. Help? IP: Logged
Message: Just bought a 92 Dakota sport 5 speed manual, V6.
Didn't shift into reverse on my test drive. Bought from private party.
Came home and it is REALLY hard to get into reverse. Just won't go without a lot of pushing, jerking, talking to it.
Any ideas of what the problem is? 160,000 miles.
Thanks for any advice. Lynn.

Message: That's true. It's an Asian trans, and I drove that same truck for 8 yrs. There are two things to do: shift to 2nd gear to start with and then across to reverse. Or you can go straight to the reverse gate, pause, and then, as you pull back gently, ease the clutch pedal up (very slowly) and the shifter will just catch and go in. Most times, if you are able to pull it straight into reverse, it will grind sharply and quickly and THEN go in. Things just wear out over time. But if you learn the tricks, that truck will last you a lot longer (unless you bought my old 92, and then you've got lots of repair ahead!! Hahahahah)

Message: I have the same problem with my 99 RC 4x2 3.9L 5 speed. I asked the dealer about it and they said that the Dak transmisions aren't syncro-mesh transmissions like most car manual transmissions are. Put it in 1st and roll it foreward a little which should line up the gears and allow it to go into Rev. without trouble. Also, releasing the clutch slowly and rolling it foreward or back and easing the stick into Rev. works too. The reason it is difficult is because the gears arent lined up, get the gears lined up and it slips right in
