 Subject: Speedometer wont work

Hello all and let me say thank you for all the technical advice given here,Its certainly appreciated. The problem Im having now is my speedometer quit working on my 1988 Dodge Dakota(Non factory cruise,aftermarket cruise but I took it out). I know the problem could be one of three things.
1)Transmission speedometer gear
2)Speedo cable
3)The speedo head itself
If I missed something please let me know. Where and how should I begin my diagnosis,how can I tell its a certain item. I dont wanna waste my money on buying,chasing and replacing parts until I get it right,I wanna know how to pinpoint it. Again I appreciate all the help
