Subject: Oil light for 1/2 sec at startup IP: Logged
Message: Hey
My oil change before last I had to use a STP filter. I have allways used Fram. After going with the stp my oil light would come one for 1/2 second after startup, but only after letting the truck sit about 8hours. Turn key, and all the dumpy lights would light up then go off, and then the oil light for 1/2 sec and then off. This has never happend before. I don't know if the STP filter had something to do with it or is my oil pump going. Its a 2003 4x4 Extended cab with just about all the mods. After switching back to a fram it still comes on for that 1/2 sec. Any ideas or just don't worry about it.
Thanks

Message: Did you notice any sludge in the oil that you changed? Do you do any off-roading, drive in hot weather, or sit in traffic for really long periods at a time? If so (and maybe if not) there could be sludge or deposits on the pick-up pipe in the oil pan or oil passages inside the engine.

Message: I wouldn't worry about it. I doubt your oil pump is going, I doubt you have sludge buildup- a second at start up after sitting sounds pretty normal to me, it takes some time to build enough pressure to shut off the switch. And, although it may start a war, I'd be less concerned with what one STP filter did to your engine than what the steady diet of Frams has done. If you do a web search for 'Fram filters' or 'Fram oil filters' you'll find some info that indicates that Fram is about the cheapest constructed filter going. Lots of people, especially Mopar people with 'older' engines, have found they can eliminate startup lifter tick by eliminating the Fram filter and going with Wix or Purolator or even an STP.

Message: I've always run STP filters. I hold better oil press.,with 128,000 I'm holding at least 65-70 psi. But I'm running Havoline 10w-40 all year round.

Message: You may have just got a bad filter with a leaky
check valve and its draining back when sitting
frams are very good for that valve made from
cardboard
Wix is a good filter
I run the K&N its pricy at $12.99 but with the
royal purple 10w30 I run 6000 miles on the filters
and have no probs presure between 50 to 70psi
and the oil stays clean even after 6000 miles it
looks good the filters have a sythetic not paper
and filter smaller particles
There are many others like Amsoil at $10 just
depends on what you want
