What's the best mods for a 3.9L Dakota that can really gain some MPG. I'm gonna be drivin on the highway nonstop a lot next year, and I want to get my Dakota as efficient as it is attractive. A mild loss in HP/Tq is not a problem for me.

IMO, these are the 3 most cost effective:

1)complete tune up

2)synthetic fluids in engine, tranny and rear

3) properly aligned & inflated tires

royal purple does not make a fluid for the ATF +4
aplication

ATF +4 is a part sythetic fluid
Amsoil universal ATF
Redline ATF also runs well in these trans

stay away from any dextron or merctron V fluids

Your main question

Gas mileage and performance on these computer
controlled engines go hand in hand

Do the mods as you can aford them in this order
to get the gains more flow is what you want
making the engine more effecient it works less to
obtain the speed and will use less gas on the
highway working less to maintain speed

Cold air intake
bigger throttle body V8 or after market
V8 good around $100
fastman 46mm better mod stock body $250
48mm F&B best new billet $380
1.7 harland rockers bolt in no adjusting

Now do the exhaust
flowmaster 50 or dynomax 11748 single 2.5 tail
carsound high flow cat
JBA headers direct bolt in manifold replacement

You can also gasket match the intake there is a
big casting hanging down upto a 1/4 into the port
some are so bad the injector spry actualy hits it

Now is when you take a look at computer upgrades
92 93 mopar comp
94 95 manual trans also mopar comp

96 97 hypertech

98 to 03 superchips

92 to 03 Jet stage 2 chips showed a 1 to 3 mpg
gain on every truck we have put them on

tonno cover helps 1 to 3 mpg

All synthetic fluids
I run Amsoil except engine royal purple

The PVI platnium vaper injection system also helps
low end and gas mileage

My 95 4X4 with a 92 motor with 106,000 miles is
pulling between 22 to 25mpg and has hit 25.8 on
the highway

If you live where it does not get below 0 a 180
thermo will also help or go with a stant 195 it
will run around 185

After you get better flow try a set of Autolite
3923 plugs this is 1 range colder with the better
flow things heat up a bit and these will run
better AP plat tip gap .040 to .045 reg gap at
factory .035 to .040

A good cap and rotor like the Napa MO26 &28 have
solid brass incerts and will transfer more volts
to the plugs also a good set of wires like the
taylor 8mm or MSD 8.5

Larry,
I have a 97 cc with the 3.9L and I have been searching for a computer upgrade for it. Many people told me that they don't make one for the 97. only 98 and up. Are you sure that hypertech will work for me and how much of a gain will it get me. Currently I have the MSD coil, 8.5 MM wires, homebrew CAI, AP5224 plugs at .50 gap, and hard tonneau. Next will be catback exhaust, ignition box, and 48mm TB.

Thanks in advance for all your help
Lance

97 dakota,

I have the 97 dak with the 3.9 engine, follow Larry's advise. Do the intake stuff first, Cold air intake, bigger throttle body, roller rockers, then cocentrate on the exhaust free flowing muffler, high flow cat (meow), you can either replace you exhaust manifolds with 92/93 exhaust manifolds, or JBA headers, you can increase performance also by going with a hotter coil, better plug wires than stock, get the autolite 3923s and gapping them out to .045, you could also go with a complete MSD system. There is no Superchips or hypertech available for the 97 v6, your best bet is to do the CPS mod and go with a Jet stage 2 chip. This will give you some pretty good gains and descent gas mileage ta boot. I getting 16 to 18mpg in heavy stop and go mileage and 21 to 23 on the freeway. The jet chip will add about 2mpg and running the PVI injection another 2 mpg.

92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

So waht is the most cost efficient...
Looking to stay under $100...if pososible.

I already have a cold air intake, and free flowing exhaust. Will a Jet stage 2 chip off EBAY work well? (correct part # of course).
