Well I need to install a new water pump. Does anyone have an advice on tips or any other info? I'm not the most mechanichal person, but I think I can do this project. Any info on making this more simple or any "how too's" would be great. Thanks in advance.

Matt

get a haynes manual, it does a decent job. You can also purchase a subscription to alldata.com and it has it all online.

I just had mine replaced for $200 after 80k. Probably the best money I spent after looking at it. I called around and found a reputable shop willing to do it for $200 compared to the dealer's $388. Considering the price for a new pump is around $68 and the small amount of time I had, I figured the $130 for labor was well worth it.

2-3 hours if you do it yourself. A repair manual is helpful. take note of all of the bolts you remove - they are not all the same. you dont mention the year, engine, or miles.. if you have the 3.9 and you have some miles on it - it is the perfect time to replace the timing chain.....

Thanks for all the help. It's a 98 3.9 with 61,000 miles. The thing is that I just got it back from the body shop after 5 weeks. (Had a BAD water leak into the cab). I was drivig it and smelled antifreeze and stopped and saw it coming from the water pump. I got a quote from the local Ford dealership of $600. I won't take it to a Dodge dealer, they are crappy around here. I know that's high, but I don't trust anyone else. I think that 70 for the pump or 600 for the whole job, might as well give it a shot and see what goes on. I have the time and not money, so.... Thanks again for the help.

How about a chrysler dealership? Same company as Dodge. There's a Dodge / Jeep Dealer here that many dodge owners won't go to, but the Chrysler dealer up the road is fine.

All the dealers here are Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep. I will just take my time and learn how to do it. Won't kill me to try and if I can't, then I will have it done, but I will try everyone suggestions and I'm sure it will work.

I just had my pump replaced for the second time. I have a '96 with 205K. The first time I did it myself and the big nut on the front was really tight. I had to have 3 guys help me break it loose. I think the whole job cost me about $100 with new anti-freeze, T-stat, etc. Then last week the pump seized about a quarter mile to work(which is about 35 miles from home). I had no choice but to have it towed to a shop. Well, after $180 for the pump and the labor, new serpentine belt, fluids, t-stat and flush the whole job was $680.....That hurt and I know it was a rip.... But no choice and had no time...

i have to agree with Dan M. your best investmant would be getting a haynes and/or a chilton manual. i buy both for every vehicle i've got. with a bit of mechanical ability, the right tools, and a little time, shoot, you could do a complete rebuild. well close to one enyways. good luck

Had mine go a couple of weeks ago, replaced it myself for approx $60 CDN. The only thing to watch for is where the bolts come from on the water pump, they are different lenghts. Otherwise it was simple.
