Subject: Rear Axle Speed Sensor IP: Logged
Message: I diagnosed a problem with my Dakota - rear axle speed sensor needs to be replaced.
The problem:
No parts store in Burbank or surrounding areas seems to know what I am talking about when I ask for this part. The Dodge dealership parts division is closed today - Sunday. I'd rather not use them anyway because 1) they cost more, and 2) they see a girl and think they can walk all over me.
Does anyone know of an alternate name I should be using to describe the part? I realize these guys (and gals) working in parts stores are not necessarily mechanics - and so for that reason, they look in their computer and find no "rear axle speed sensor" for a '00 Dakota and tell me "no."
I also tell them rear differntial, just plain speed sensor, rear speed sensor, rear axle speed sensor... etc. I try a number of combinations, but their computers are pulling up nothing.
I know this is a common problem for the '99 and '00 Dakotas, so it shouldn't be this dang difficult to find the stinking part, right?
Sorry, I am beyond annoyed with these Cali parts stores at the moment.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Message: This is the most unusual thing I have ever encountered.
Even with that name, I can't find this part.
My Dad in Georgia called. I explained my dilema. Then, he called our Dodge repair shop friend... he immediately said, "yeah, sounds like she needs a new speed sensor."
Funny that Napa, Advanced Auto Parts, Kragen, etc... no one around here seems to know what this part is - most think I am talking foolishly and don't know what I really need.
Thanks for your help, Doug. Guess I'll have to keep trying.
The thing that scares me is that I drive through a lot of two-lane canyon roads around here (daily). And when I slow down to take the curves, the engine dies... and as a result, I lose power steering. That can be tough to handle on a curve.
I reckon I could just touch the cluth long enough to put the truck into Neutral and hope that the engine doesn't die.
I understand that the next step in the series of events stemming from a bad speed sensor (including ABS light and Brake light on, no speedometer below 30mph, and low-speed stalling) is for the 2nd and 3rd gears to quit functioning. Then what? You have to go from 1st to 4th? That can't be good.
I'm rambling and ranting - just fully annoyed here.
Gonna keep checking with various auto parts.

Message: Rear wheel speed sensor is the official Dodge name for it. This is
also the name at Kragen. It's a $40 part and you can change it
yourself if you are careful and do not damage the part when
removing it.
You could call it an ABS sensor just make sure it is for the rear as
there are ABS sensors on each of the front steering knuckles.

Message: Wow, Mark.
You are a total life saver. After your first reply, I immediately got on the phone with Kragen here in Burbank - they are (evidently) complete morons and still did not know what I was talking about.
But now I can just order it.
Thanks a million. I was ready to pull my hair out!

Message: I am aware of the rear differential speeed sensor you speak of - but I think it is only used for the ABS. I believe that all the other symptoms you describe (speedo & tranny staying in 2nd gear) are the result of the transmission output sensor. of course, I could be wrong...

had that symptom too. No other sensor had gone bad.

Message: well, ive never looked at the speed sensor in the rear before, but a good suggestion would be to pull the part, and look for a part number on it.

Message: All Fixed!
Thanks for your help, all. I absolutely love this site... goofy to say, I know... but I can't imagine how much $ I saved by replacing this part myself (not just labor costs, but everything else the mechanics would have found wrong).
I got the part from the Dodge dealership as none of the local parts stores carried it. I removed my spare tire (so that I could get beneath my truck better), I crawled under with a wrench in one hand and my dad on the cell phone in my other hand.
It was a bit tough since the fitting is so tight, but I got it done!
Again, thanks for help on figuring out the correct name for the part I needed. I certainly worked out.
