Subject: Ticking Noise after manifold gasket chan IP: Logged
Message:
Just had my manifold gasket changed as well as the exhaust manifold gaskets changed.
Now there is a loud ticking noise coming from the drivers side. Any clue what this might be? Lifters/tappets? It sounds terrible! Now im thinking the lifters are going to have to be removed and cleaned up a bit. Thoughts? please?
BTW, this is an 88 3.9 /w 218K (and yes, its ALL original)

I think this is going to turn into more of a project than I thought It was...

Message: probably is timing chain, i know mine is shot, ticks at the same speed and sound once its warmed up, so i doubt its lifters or exhaust leaks. will be fixing mine this summer, hopefully with a new cam

Message: well, I spent today working on this problem. I went with the feeling that it was the lifters so i pulled the manifold.
some of the lifters were OK and slipped in and out very easily. others were a bit sticky, and the ones I thought were making the noise were realllllly sticky. I took each one out and whiped everything down, then dunked em in some synthetic. moved them up and down until i felt they were moving like they should be.
WOW what a difference that made. this 3.9 is running like it did when it was new! every single internal part is original and with 218K on it. i think the synthetic oil has made it possible for this engine to go this long. I might keep it till it reaches 300K now!

Message: Tim - How long have you been running synthetics? I have a 95 which now has 153k+ on it. Back in november i had sticky lifters. I had the engine flush service performed on it and it removed "alot of crud". Since then, the noise has went away and my gas milage shot back up to where it should have been. I had done regular oil changes but still some broke down. Since then, I've switched to synthetics. Even with running the synthetics now, I'm going to have this service done yearly.

been doing the synthetic thing for as long as I can remember.
speaking of that, when did synethtic oil come to market and start to be used regularly?

Message: synthetics begain to gain popularity in the 80's
and the use has been growing ever since
I have used them in all the motors I built after
the initial 3000 mile run in on dino oil since
about 1985
When you tear one of the motors down that runs
on syn there is noticebly less wear on all
moving parts cyl walls also show less wear as do
lifter bores but most don't check the bores but
I blue print every motor I build deck height
main bearing bore and alinement must all be right
on in a high perf motor

Message: Im verry supprised larry did not pick up on thiss one. 10 to 1 sais either you have a defulted exhaust manifold gasket or a warped manifold. Have it checked out or it will only get worse bud. Just my 2 sence but i know its happened to me b4. Good luck with the truck.

Message: after removing the lifters, doing some cleaning, etc and then puttin it back together all seems to be just fine.
on this one i think ill take your 10:1 odds :) although im not sayin i even know a little about these engines. this was the first time i did something like this.
so how long you fellas think this one is gonna keep going? 218K and counting....
(maybe i better sell it soon)
