Subject: Timing off IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97CC, 3.9L, about 90K miles.
Well I am getting a tapping sound which I think is slightly from spark knock and/or the timing chain. I did the vacuum test by plugging the PCV valve hole and the Breather hole and after holding it for 10 seconds I got a little puff of air, so I'm pretty sure my Belly Pan is ok. I hooked up a vacuum gauge and the gauge read right below normal, and the gauge said it could be due to timing. When I use premium gas I get less tapping, but there is still a rattle that sounds too fast to be a spark knock. I checked the timing with a timing light and it was off by about 6 degrees. Could a loose chain cause the timing to be off, which would cause the spark knock with cheaper gas?

Message: A loose timing chain will certainly cause your timing to be off - although I believe the timing is normally retarded when the chain is loose - which cuts your power and should not cause pinging under acceleration. is your noise only when accelerating? then its probably ping. if you are getting a rattle even at idle - the timing chain itself makes noise when its loose by hitting against the timing cover.

Message: David-I'll try to post whatever I found out.
tc-I get the small rattle at idle, and when I don't use high octane gas, it sounds like the noise is louder, and it's even louder under accleration, but I can't tell if it is a pinging seperate from the rattle. I've noticed that it has a rough idle in the mornings too.

Message: hey peter, i just talked to a buddy of mine and he looked at my truck real quick and said that the sound was most likely an exhaust leak. i'm gonna take the truck to his house this weekend so he get a better look at it. i'll let you know if i find anything.
