Sometimes when i shut off my truck and step out i get a good smell of gas. I've looked there aren't any leaks or puddles so it's just vapors. I have a Trouble code and it's P0455, A large evaporative emissions control system leak. Could this more than likely be the gas cap releasing vapors???

TIA-

Hi there BrandonG,

I really don't know any answer to your post. However, a buddy of mine owns a dodge ram truck that had a similar problem. He never told me the root to the problem like you did ( Trouble Codes ) but took it to the dealers and found major problems. I'm sure the dealers had a field day with his truck ( my friend isn't really the mechanic type ) so I dont know how much merit to all the possible problems they fixed but I did read the invoice that listed, catalitic converter, one of the cyclinders loss of compression, fuel injection problem, and I can't remember the rest. I don't know, but the mention of gas smell through the exhaust emissions reminded me of my friend's same complaint. Like I said, he never really put a finger on it towards what actually resolved the problem, but eventually it got fixed. Good luck.

I think all of the posts about the gas cap were small leak detected not large, I could be mistaken. though if the gas cap was really bad, i guess it could cause a large leak, but probably not. I have no experience with that.

Small is P0442

Would be good to investigate where the source is? under hood? under bed?

It could be just a disconnected hose.

The system is there to manage the vapors put off in the gas tank
Id check the hoses at the gas tank thats where mine became cracked and set a code for large evaporative system leak.

Thanks for all the info guys...I'll start out by checking the hoses by the tank. I'm not sure how many turns are normal but it only takes like a 1/4 - 1/2 a turn for my gas cap to be tight...I don't know if they range or not but is that normal??

Doesn't take much to tighten my cap either.

If it does turn out to be a hose issue, you will need to get it from Napa. Advance and Autozone don't carry that big of a fuel line hose. Napa sells it by the foot.

When I replaced my fuel pump a few weeks ago, i went ahead and replaced the fuel lines, the clamps on mine were rusted.
