Message: The 4.0 I6 is tough
I have the high output 4.0 I6 right now it has over 189,000 miles on it in my jeep. It still has the power to spin the tires with 2 300 lbs people in it.A downside to the motor is there is no high end power its all low end.

Message: The 4.0 is a pretty stout six. Clifford Performance has some parts to get good power out of one and other places have kits to stroke them. WIth a cam you could move the powerband up a little. The Jeep engines have a huge aftermarket. Basicly it is the same six that has been in amcs forever, they just changed the displacement and head for the most part, internaly anyway. Hopefully it is a HO, because they have the best head.
How hard the swap is depends on how you go about it and what years the jeep and dodge are. It seems the older they both are the easier it would be. Im not sure about the bolt patern on the tranny but it might be the same. You would have to fabricate or have someone fabricate motor mounts. If you run a carb wiring is easier, but if you decide to run efi you had best have good wiring skills and be willing to sort though a bit of wiring. You didnt say what year you have but if its a gen one the engine might be long enough to require a electric fan in front of the radiator. Depending on years getting your guages to work could be a hassle. Im sure there is more since each swap has its own set of problems.
It would probably be easier to switch to a v6 or v8 from another dakota, and cheaper since all the parts are already made for you and the wiring systems are similar. Depending on the years of the vehicles, wiring could be fairly simple to outright hell if you are swaping from jeep to dodge.

Message: I have the gen3, its a 97. I think the jeep is a 93-96 somewhere around there.
Ive been thinking that its a bad idea for the swap. So many problems and what not. V6 would be better :) thanks for the help. Ill pop back in when I figure something better.
Happy trucking

Message: Being a former Jeeper myself, I considered this swap for a while. I had a few I6 long blocks lying around and I even considered building a stroker.
In the end what turned me off the idea is the weight and length of the engine; over 600lbs with accessories and the cost versus the gain. Sure it would be a neat truck after the swap but it would cost an arm and a leg.
I'm not trying to discourage you, just because I backed out doesn't mean you have to. Go for it. I'm looking at swapping a diesel into my 01 SLT. The Cummins from the Ram is way too big and heavy so I think I'll go this route.
Good Luck.

Message: The 4.0 is a very torquey motor - I've had 2 of them and put over 200K miles on each. I'm pretty sure the engine is too long to fit in a dak. the hood on my comanche & GC was very long.
