Subject: Check Engine Emissions Leak Large IP: Logged
Message: I own a 1999 Dodge Dakota V6 3.9l and for the past few months my check engine light has been coming on and going off. It started one day when I went to fill up my tank and my gas cap was loose. So being an emissions reading, I figured that was the culperate. About a month later, it went off. Then I made sure I clicked the gas cap when i closed it and it came on again. Same code, so Advanced Auto Parts cleared it for me and I got a new gas cap (one that wasn't so hard to click). Then a couple weeks ago, it came on again with the same code and then a week later it went off. The code was : ENG: 161/P0455 EVAP System Leak (Large). Does anyone have an idea what this could be? I'm trying to sell it and I really don't want the light coming on during a test drive!

Message: the hoses that lead to or from your evap purge canister are either broken/rotted or missing/disconnected.

Message: Wow, I'd never just drive around with a check engine light without hooking up the scanner and finding out what the problem is. It's a good way to wind up stranded. Those scanners are pretty cheap these days for just readers.

Message: It may well be that ' gas cap ' again !
But check the joins in the neck from the cap on down to the tank as well.
This is a common problem for that year truck..
probable an " oversensitive " sensor
or [ tight ] limits on {readings } from it..

Message: Every time the check engine light comes on I do get a scanner hooked up to check what the light is. I never said I didn't. I said that the reading is the same each time. And I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem with the same readings that they could point me in a direction at what the cause is. But I always check the light code, even if I think its the same each time.

Message: Been there, Done that! I had the same intermitent check engine lights on my '02 4.7L 4x4. I replaced the gas cap when I got "P0456" = Evaporative Leak Monitor Small Leak Detected, Reset the computer and it was fine for a couple days. I called the stealership and they wanted me to set up an appointment for 2 weeks later. I was told as long as it's not flashing and still running OK just bring it in when I can. really not wanting to spend $200 bucks for diagnostic for them to tell me something else is wrong I kept putting it off & dealing with it. After 6 months of staring at the Check Engine light I ran a scan again, This time I got codes "P0456", "P0442" = Evaporative Leak Monitor Medium Leak Detected and "P0455" = Evaporative Leak Monitor Large Leak Detected, well that should be easy to find!
I had been doing some serious off-roading so I crawled under the truck looking for the Evap canister, figured I just tore the hoses off, Nope still attatched but I had been smelling a strong odor of Gasoline every time I filled up after an hour of pulling on hoses & wires dropping mud & dirt in my eyes, I got frustrated again.
I was at the gas station filling up my truck and a guy walking by looked under my truck and said I was leaking. I drove it home hoping it would burst into flames because I was getting really frustrated now!
I crawled under the truck looking for the cause of the leak and found the locking ring for the fuel pump was loose. Of course there is only enough room to get 3 fingers in there. I had to unbolt the Cab and Bed, jack both of the up enough to get my hands in and a using the flat end of a crowbar I put almost 2 full turns on it! before I tightened the lock ring it was pretty obvious the fuel pump was loose, duuh, large evap leak. After tightening the lock ring the fuel pump was still loose, closer inspection the top of the fuel pump assembly had split in half. I called the warranty hotline and was told the Fuel Pump was replaced under warranty at 22K miles, I was pushing 52K now and it had been almost 2 years. She said that "defective parts" coverage was only good for 12 mo/12k miles. Not having the $400 for a new pump/assembly, I had a tube of "Super GOOP" that sealed the leaks in my Jon Boat :) I ran a heavy bead around the mounting base and a heavy bead round the locking ring and across the crack, gave it about 2 hrs to cure and put everything back together. No more "Evap" leaks yet! Someday when the fuel pump goes out that's gonna be fun to change!!
