Message: It could be the distributor pickup, it's signal is used by the computer to tell the fuel injectors when to fire. It it's operation is intermittent it might be hard to find. I had a similar problem on 97 v6 dak, it developed a high rpm backfire. There were no check engine lights.
How many miles on your dak? If it's over 100,000 you may need to change the following 3 sensors; the distributor pickup (also called the camshaft position sensor), the crank position sensor (located on the passenger side of the truck, between the firewall and the back of the engine), the oxygen sensor referred to some time as the O2 sensor (located in the exhaust ahead of the catalytic convertor),the O2 sensor should be replaced every 60,000 miles on the early 90's Dakota pickups. My son has a 1992 Dodge Dakota with 3.9 not 4 wheel drive and he has had problems with all 3 of these sensors.
I have a 92 Dak 4x4 with a 112,000 miles and I have had to change all three of these to maintain good engine performance.
Report back when you find your problem good luck when you solve your problem. If you need futher help email at wadak1234@yahoo.com. I will be of futher assistance.
Larry from J and J periodically checks in here also. He has his own shop and has been working on Mopar Products for 30 years.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Message: Try changing the distributor gear and bushing. Those are notorious for going bad on the 3.9L Just be carefull not to set it out of timing. Good luck!!
